Mud flaps, do they help?

I'm thinking of installing mud flaps front and rear but do they actually help?

Both regarding stone chips but also for not splashing up a lot of dirt.

I had mine fitted a week ago, and have done 1500 miles since. I would say they do make a difference and I would recommend them.

How much do the dealers charge for installing them? There's a long list of dealer installed options, many of which are simply placed in the car - though it wouldn't surprise me if they tried to charge to do even that. However, installing the mud-flaps involves cutting or drilling so they may well charge and the deployable side steps requires almost a day's worth of work.

With my Evoque, the installation I saw on other cars was so bad - you could drive a bus through the gap between the mud-flap and the car - that I decided to buy them at discount from Duckworth and do it myself. I think the modest skills required and mindset of a body-shop are more suited to installation than a service department who are not used to measuring, cutting, drilling.

The instruction leaflets are available on Topix and include the number of hours suggested for installation. Mark

My dealer wanted £240 fitted! Shocked Much cheaper to get them from Dan @ Duckworths and fit them yourself. Arrived: MY16 A/B SDV6 in Aruba, Ivory interior, piano black trim, black panoramic roof, spare wheel, blind spot monitoring, mudlaps and more... Twisted Evil

Think the key is whether they can be fitted without taking the wheels off because it's more involved if you do. I originally tried and failed with the Evoque, all fine with the extra space.

I managed to fit them on my Freelander without taking the wheels off. I am hoping the RRS will be the same! Arrived: MY16 A/B SDV6 in Aruba, Ivory interior, piano black trim, black panoramic roof, spare wheel, blind spot monitoring, mudlaps and more... Twisted Evil

I've got deployable steps and they get absolutely minging. I've had a set of mudflaps sent from Duckworths and will fit them myself when I can, this should help a bit. As Mark_N said, if you get them done by a dealer they just don't do it properly (probably a job for some apprentice anyway) - I'm sure my attention to detail is better.

As for fitting accessories in general, the dealer quoted £300 for supply and fit of rubber mats inc loadspace. I ordered and got them myself for £225 and it took me 10 mins to fit. It would have been 5 but I have a broken leg at the moment....

I'm rubbish at stuff like this and as my sales guy has organized free fitting I'm going with it.

I will be paying MSRP for the mud flaps which is a bit more than Duckworths (who by the way quoted me more money for a replacement Evoque key than my dealer).

Free fitting or not, I'd want the mudflaps to be fitted properly so have told them I will be casting my beady eyes over their work Rolling Eyes Current...

Can someone tell me what "minging" means?

Flaps are a waste of time here, it hasn't rained for 3 months.

The best I've come up with so far thanks to the www.......

"Minging".
Comes from Romany (gypsy) "minchi", meaning either the female genitalia, or women collectively, when referred to as sexual objects. There is also a Scottish "ming", meaning to look or smell unpleasant. Take your pick!

"Manky"....similar.......started off as Old French "manc", meaning defective, and then found its way into Scottish as "mank" (now obsolete, but again meaning defective), and finally changed its Scottish (and English dialect) meaning to "filthy, dirty, or rotten"..

Can we send you some water from the UK? Current...
