Small 'puncture'

We were doing 70 mph on the M6 on our way home from Scotland yesterday (a 450 mile journey) and around Lancaster way the 'road surface' became juddery, we moved to the left lane and it was the same, then I noticed smoke from the rear nearside tyre so we pulled onto the hard shoulder and stopped. Pic below of the tyre. I'm not sure how this happened as from when the road surface became juddery to when we were stopped on the hard shoulder was in the space of 20 seconds.

Was it simply a flat tyre that became hot then shredded?

Looking for a new tyre now, which means 2 new ones on the back so they match and if the front 2 are due then I will have to buy 4 Crying or Very sad

Whats the best option at the moment to go for, i.e. decent tyres without spending stupid money?

Also is something like this any good http://www.tyrepal.co.uk or a waste of time?

Looks like the rims cut through the sidewall. Not sure how good that tyre pressure monitor would be, You would have to brake really quickly to stop something like that happening. MY 09TDV8

I had this similar to yours, is the tyre a Pirelli Scorpion buy chance? just after I bought the car I was travelling home on motorway about 65 -70 mph and felt a vibration and managed to get home to find side wall /tread delamination, tne tyres had done about 20,000 miles and after replacing with spare returned to garage and they replaced another 2 after showing similar faults.Check the other tyres for a separation of tread to the side wall.

Is this a good option?

Don't they need to be a Y rated tyre?

Not sure about the legalities but your insurers my expect you to have LR recommended tyre spec for the car.
I always replace tyres with the car manufacturers speed and load rating recommendations, regardless of how o.t.t. they are.

I think the load rating is a legal requirement but speed rating isn't, as speed rating is just the maximum speed the tyre will do whilst carrying its rated maximum load. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

AJS 4x4 site sponsor has an add in the for sale section for 2 part worn tyres £30 each, may be an option worth looking at MY16 AUTOBIOGRAPHY Indus silver with some toys

I am going to get 4 Grabber GT 275 40 R20 106Y XL fitted tomorrow from Tyreworks Tyres Centres in Market Drayton for £158 including vat each (fitted)

I was wondering as I have 5 identical alloy wheels plus space saver if I should get all 5 alloys fitted with Grabber GT's and drive around with a full size spare wheel and leave the space saver in the garage?

I am not sure why there is a space saver wheel instead of a 5th full size one?

Very Happy Excellent

Any idea why the spare wheel on a RRS is a space saver?

Think the spare is a 19" wheel as opposed to the 20" but not sure of the reason why. Could be a cheaper option from new?

I'm sure the spare wheel winch will accept a 20" wheel but you will. Need to check for sure. MY16 AUTOBIOGRAPHY Indus silver with some toys
