I have another order in already and don't see any personal benefit to paying for this stuff, the only thing that would be good would be WiFi.

How good is a WiFi hotspot in a car? How does it work? Does it look like this will be part of that package or included as standard? 2017 MY - Dynamic, same again!

Who needs a wifi hotspot in a car? What's the benefit over the usual method of tethering to your phone to provide a data link? Presumably you just end up with two bills - one for the phone and one for a sim in the car wifi system.

I reckon the Land Rover Assist bit will be useful though, sadly. Tells them exactly where you are and what's wrong with the vehicle. I bet they still send out a bloke in a van even though it needs to be put on a flat bed...  2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

I have no idea what you mean by tethering? I wanted to google a saddle rise opening times last Saturday and had no 3G as I was in the sticks so in events like that some kind of connection would be good... 2017 MY - Dynamic, same again!

If you was in the sticks with InControl how would that help? No signal is no signal, it's not going to build a mast and connect to your service provider

As Nick says, if your phone doesn't work then the chances are that the car's system won't work either. Now, they might have designed in a clever aerial to improve connectivity in low signal areas, if not I don't see why it's a benefit.

Tethering just means that your tablet (or whatever device wants the data) uses your phone to connect. It means that devices without 3G capability can still use 3G through your phone. Your phone effectively becomes a wifi hotspot. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

The WiFi in the car will let you connect things in the car - but the car needs to communicate with the outside world which will usually be via the cellular network for which some-one pays. That's unless you have satellite phone etc which is mega bucks.

Since its all radio signals there is no-way of overcoming blackspots caused by hills or buildings.

Just no point.

There is some info on this system publically available - im sure there was even a topic on here when it first came up.

I think its the way to go, but they do need something that's more signal robust in to ensure the car connects to the world when mobile and not something akin to the TV reception (although improved on the 2014) Mike

Seems only to make sense if it enables a better internet connection than from a phone or tablet directly by using a better aerial and more powerful transmitter. That said, the technology will be frozen in time, so by the time we are on 7G networks, this will appear like a dinosaur, a bit like 10 year old fitted sat-navs do now.

Beyond that, the benefits stem from the applications which can be provided which make use of it. Stolen vehicle tracking, err, err, what else? Maybe there's benefit in having a wi-fi network in the car even if it is not connected to the internet. I said maybe.

Not sure an iPhone App which allows you to find out how much fuel is in the thing will be useful and not good at impressing when speed dating. Mark

I guess the wifi hotspot would allow several passengers to make use of a single 4G connection to stream content but that in itself is going to be very pricey - the mobile companies are going to love this sort of technology in cars because they're going to be making a lot more money from data charges.

It does feel like one of those "answers looking for a question" situations. They can provide a wifi hotspot, great, but, other than making the car feel even more luxurious, does it bring anything useful?
