A Must Read Tip To All New MY14 Owners...

FYI - The car has no dip stick to check the oil.

Its all done via the steering wheel computer on the display. From what I understand these cars do drink oil so please make sure that you check it regularly.

Handy to know and will stop you looking like a dip stick too! WINNER - 2009 Best in Class Range Rover Sport Award

I suppose no need to check it manually.
It should be done at startup of the engine automatically?

No, it wont give a oil level readout while the engine is running, or until 10 mins after the engine has stopped. So you have to check it by switching on the ignition and checking the level before starting the engine. 2017 3.0 SDV6 Autobiography Santorini Black

Had this from MY10 onwards - pain in the Censored

Who wants to either a) wait 10 minutes in car as temperature drops with heating off or b) go back out in the cold to check display after removing coat, etc and warming up Rolling Eyes

My Astra GTE in 1987 had a better system for checking the oil when I jumped in and started it Bow down Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW

It's also got a second smaller battery which powers things like the windows, electric tailgate etc, as I discovered today!

Interesting. Same procedure in the Audi A8 4.2 TDI, but I only have to wait two minutes before taking a reading.

You can bypass the 10 minute wait by lifting the bonnet, it somehow tricks the system. That was shown to me by my dealer technician. Wink

Never knew this, I had my MY12 for 19 months, did 23k miles and never checked the oil once, I reckoned that if it was low a light would come on Embarassed no warning lights did come on so the car certainly did not use much oil. What are others experience re oil consumption with the later models or actually in general? MY 2014 HSE Dynamic

My 12 plate didn't use any oil in its first year and 9000 miles. I check my oil weekly.

Yes, you would think a light would come on, and I guess it would eventually.

However I checked my level one day and it it said add 0.5l of oil. I did that and waited and it needed another 0.5l to clear the message.

So I have no idea at what point a warning message appears, but you can certainly use a litre of oil and you will get no warning unless you proactively check the level. Shocked 2023 P440e SE Dynamic on order -cancelled

The problem with bypassing the 10 minutes is that you're likely to get an under reading. I suspect the 10 minutes is to allow oil to get back down to the sump and let everything settle down. Just a thought. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed
