2010MY 3.0 tdv6 45k engine failure/seized

Not been on here for some time and revisiting not under the best circumstances.

My RRS shut down on the m5 on the 28th Sep, I had a trailer and digger in tow and was heading back from Exeter to Norwich. I fortunately managed to navigate between the cones on the hard shoulder where the vehicle reached a standstill.
To cut a long story short the vehicle was recovered by LR (initial roadside diagnosis was alternator) it was then moved back to my local dealer who the reported after a day the engine is seized!! Slightly shocked is an understatement! The warranty ran out on the day before, 27th sep.
At current LR have quoted a ball park figure of 10k to replace the engine and they will contribute 25%......age and milage in mind I feel that they should be meeting 100% of the costs.
I have a slight hitch in that fact that I didn't stamp my service book for the last service, purely an oversight. i employee a mechanic so servicing work on my vehicles is undertaken in house. LR seem to think this is a get out of jail free card, I have since sent a receipt for the oil to them so they can see I put the right grade in.
They are now telling me that before anything else can happen I have to authorise, at my cost the dealer to carry out a diagnosis. I have told them they can diagnose but i will not be paying.....things have now reached a halt.
Any advice?

Agree, costs shouldn't be for your account.

Hopefully Simple1 on here will see the thread and offer you some pointers.

Hope you get it sorted Thumbs Up ON THE WAY: BMW F21 M140i

Sorry to hear of such a failure at such a low mileage. Unless you are a VAT registered garage to service vehicles, then i'm sorry, you are lucky to get a 25% offer from Land Rover towards the cost of repair. How often was your vehicle serviced ? And when was it last serviced ? Judging by your username, your sport works harder than most.
Good luck with the outcome.

I'd pay for the diagnosis and then take the 25% contribution or whatever (but say its under duress because you need your car) to get the thing sorted.

Then once its all OK if you're still unhappy I'd go to the small claims court for the rest.

You obviously you use your RRS in the course of your business and, as has been said, maintaining it yourself while under LR's warranty was perhaps not the best decision. This might have been your first mistake so don't make another by wasting time and money on a battle you are unlikely to win.

Get it back on the road earning cash.

I thought my luck was bad - only 1 day out of warranty Shocked

I have every sympathy for you and hope you get sorted but I think you will have a battle on your hands - I speak from experience and reading posts on here Bow down

I know the EEC ruled on using non franchised and reasonable life, etc but unless you enjoy fighting for your rights its easier to keep it simple. All this protection looks good on paper to the expense fiddling politicians but in the real world it just lines the pockets of solicitors Rolling Eyes

When I look at the cost of these vehicles to buy and fix I realised that paying the extortionate fees LR charge to service them is my only option no matter how poor the dealers are - when they go wrong you can not hand them any excuse. I do not even use my local LR specialist until the warranty expires to avoid buck passing. If you had serviced in accordance with warranty conditions I can not see how LR could charge you a penny to put this right Sad Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW

Still hoping for a S2 one day!

Like others, I don't rate your chances of obtaining more than the 25% offered by LR. I had issues with a 6000 mile car in 2008 and was eventually "assisted" into a new vehicle after much argument.

While I don't doubt the ability of your mechanics, I think you should take the 25% and move on. Otherwise you will waste lots of time and stress without any change in outcome. On the face if it, LR is in the right, reasonable or not.

Thanks for all the responses guys, didn't know id had so many!

So I made progress today, LR are paying for the diagnosis to get things moving. The story should begin to unravel now and I will understand my chances in a little more depth.

My RRS has been serviced with the correct parts at the correct intervals, yes in house but I have qualified mechanic and we look after serving on clio vans to 22 tonne excavators - not all our own I will add, this is part of the services we offer.

This is my third RRS and previous to those a disco 3, all have had niggles. The usual bushes, boot not opening, loss of power etc etc. Im never happy about these issues but put up with them as its a good bus on the whole.

With reference to what its used for, its doesn't do as much towing as I used to but a bit now and again. Thats what its for! I also own a disco 3 and defender tdci, both of which have covered many more miles than the RRS but still go and do a lot more work!

I can see why folks may not think I have the best of cases as I am lacking in FMDSH but the fundamental fact is it was a £55k car that has malfunctioned severely a day over 3 years old showing a mere 45k.

The 25% gesture doesn't mean a lot when it will still cost me £3500 more to get the engine replaced at a dealer rather than a specialist.

Its a hugely frustrating situation but i will be doing all I can to get this resolved, thanks for your comments and opinions.

What a fantastic outcome! What was wrong with the engine and what persuaded LR to cover the costs?
