Test drove a 4.2 SC not sure now

Hi all, 1st post been lurking a while reading alot..

Im in the market for a RRS, im a bit of a petrol head always had fast cars etc, currently have a VW R32 and clio 197 R27 remapped etc.

Im looking to get a RRS HST but couldnt decide on which engine size to get.

I had thought i had made my mind up for a 4.2 SC until i test drove my mates one at the weekend.

I loved the drive of the RRS but i think i was expecting more performance from the SC, i know its a 3 ton box but i wasnt taken with it.

This leads me to think if its gonna be sluggish anyway then to go for the 2.7 tdv6 and remap just to get more mpg ?

Whats everyone thoughts on this ?

I also do alot of small journeys and have owned turbos in the past, and know about the aggro that goes with them, the RRS isint a daily runner as such but would be used alot.
Would a tdv6 be ok for this ?

cheers and look forward to advice towards my finding the right one

I have an RRS SC 4.2 and a Porsche Boxster S. I've also had a TDV8 and 997 C2S and a Jag XKR. Whilst I like the power of the SC and it does feel quick, I find that with the small range/ high MPG and the high cost of fuel, I'm always driving it very carefully, whereas I didn't so much in my TDV8. I think the SC can work for you if you don't do that many miles and because they can generally be picked up at a good price/ spec compared to the TDV6/ TDV8.

it all depends upon what you're comparing the S/C with - your previous cars have been very fast, and small, hence giving the effect of 'faster', a bit like a go-kart feels extremely fast at only 30mph. I had the FFRR 4.4 V8 and that has nothing on the 4.2 S/C. Mines in for software update and they've found a wiring/fuel problem that explains why ' it don't shift like other supercharges', so the garage says - I didn't notice at all ! Maybe your friends S/C has performance problems too ? Did you put it into sport mode ? I find that I never need to engage sport as its way powerful enough as it is. or get a 5.0 litre one !

2005 -2009 Rover Range Rover Sport (4.2L,Supercharged) 0-60 mph 7.3 secs Quarter Mile 15.8 secs

2010 Land Rover Range Rover Sport (5.0L,Supercharged) 0-60 mph 5.9 secs Quarter Mile 14.5 secs

2007 Clio R27 0-60 mph 6.9 secs  RR Sport Supercharged Vesuvius Orange 4.2 V8 First edition

Prefer RR Vouge S/C but they don't do Orange !

United Kingdom 2006 Range Rover Sport TDV6 HSE Java Black

Hi, I previously had a SC and loved it, even when not in Sport if I put my foot down the car shifted big time.
I have now gone from a diesel Vogue back to a RRS bit this time due to work I have a 2.7. I have had it remapped and have to say I am very very pleased with it.
It is not the same as the SC but not that bad at all. If you can live with the fuel consumption then go for the SC, you will love it, enjoy. 2017 Range Rover Sport HSE

If you are going for an S/C, may as well do it properly, and go for the 5.0 Cool

If MPG is a concern in any way, shape or form, go for the TDV8. Similar MPG to the TDV6, but with an extra 80hp, and sounds lovely Thumbs Up
