There is but it involves using a diagnostic tool. Obvious answer would be have a look and see which one is the most discoloured and black? Unless you are intending to go Switzerland, why not take the opertunity to bin them? Whistle 2x TDV6. SE and HSE. Both returned to sender with issues👀
TDV8 Sport HSE...... Gone. Loved it but it didn't love me!!
Now rolling in MY10 Fullfat TDV8 Vogue. Slammed it to go round corners🙈
Cruising daily #56 mph in a Volvo V8. 😱

If you lift the bonnet, then get someone to switch on the ignition you should hear two clicks, one on the left hand side of the engine and one on the right, if you only hear one click, then chances are there is one that isn't working, the one that doesn't click. Thats the easiest way of checking. The lack of power and plenty of black smoke out of the exhaust is also a tell tail sign that one or even two of the egr's are not working. It could also be the egr cooler that is leaking another common problem on the older models. Sad

AS you have an 05, just blank them. Thumbs Up

If you replace them, they will only break again. With blanking, it's much cheaper, easier, and EGR failure will never let you down again Thumbs Up

You can remove them completely, or just blank the pipe off to stop them from functioning. Presumably you just fitted 2 blanking plates?

Can do it a few ways Thumbs Up

Stick a pair of plates between the valve and pipework
Remove the pipework and bolt a plate onto the top of the valve, and another onto the inlet housing
Remove the pipework from the exhaust manifold and blank there, so it doesn't go through the EGR cooler, and blank the holes in the inlet housing, and remove the EGR's altogether. This also give the option to do away with the EGR coolers too

All have the same effect, and is down to personal preference, and budget Thumbs Up

Me personally, I blanked mine at the exhaust manifold, and removed all the pipework and valves, with the view to doing away with the EGR coolers too Thumbs Up

If your getting a hissing noise then it must be sucking in air somewhere, if you have fitted the blanking plates to butterfly housing then check there that its not leaking had a few leaking from there with a cut o'ring. And did you remove the butterfly valve from the spindle.

Flack Thumbs Up

Does it sound a bit like a dump valve, but a lot quieter?

My car does it, the OP's car does it. After driving a load of other TDV6's, they all do it too, but it is very faint

Removing the EGR on an 05/06MY car does not affect it in any way, shape or form Thumbs Up

c15ebb, its completely normal. After putting my Disco on the road, I heard that noise, and was starting to worry about it, until I drove a few other TDV6's and they all made the same noise. Set my mind at ease! Laughing
