Try a hard reset (battery disconnect).

Hard reset powers down the various ECUs and seem to remember reading in the workshop manual that it clears the engine adaptations which may sound daft but all the ECUs interact so it may help if one of them has its knickers in twist. Other daft sounding suggestions that can cure many faults include checking your brakelight bulbs are working and are OE parts; fully charging the battery with a decent smart charger and, changing the brake light switch. Another popular fix is checking the pivot of the linkage on the side of the gearbox which has a habit of seizing (you might notice this as a stiff feel to the gear lever - it should move freely. You didn't mention if the garage found any fault codes but it would be important to know if there were any found. 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

Thanks for clearing that up. The linkage is fine as this has been checked and the gears move freely.

There was error codes that popped up, I will post these when I find them out as I dont have the sheet with me.

You need to Contact Liam on the forum and explain your situation and that the car is just out of warranty and see if he can help in any way it should not fail at this mileage.

Multiplate clutch E is used in gears 4, 5 and 6 so that would seem to match with the speeds it shows the error.

As flack says, it must be worth approaching LR (and maybe even ZF) as that gearbox shouldn't fail after such a short life.

It might also be worth, once you get the thing sorted, getting the LR Approved extended warranty. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

That DTC doesn't sound good. If LR can be persuaded that you have a case and help out that's good.

But is complete replacement of the gearbox always the only option?

Could a good transmission specialist just replace the faulty part? If for example the clutch isn't operating properly because the mechatronic isn't activating it correctly then could a good repairer just fix the mechatronic? 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

I have just had the gearbox replaced as it was the only option.

There was bearings etc worn inside the gearbox... at 22,000 miles and has cost me £4000!!!

Not happy!

Hi and welcome,
Not heard of quite that fault before. If the gearbox fluid has never been changed then a flush and filter change would be a good thing regardless. Is the shifter a bit stiff? There is a pivot on the actuator cable on the outside of the gearbox that seizes and the parts to renew are only about £13 so would be good idea to change that too. A good independent garage would do both jobs for you and could perhaps do a diagnostic check for any fault codes. 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE
