Good point, indeed. I'm going to testdrive the MY2014 model again in the near future (my oldest son asked for this, he wasn't around when I did the first testdrive). I'm going to check the 'need' for these side steps with him, I'm curious

They do look particularly slim and not that useable, but that's only going on the pictures, I've not seen/used them in the flesh.

Based on those pictures, if it was me, it would be either none or deployable Cool ON THE WAY: BMW F21 M140i

Any mods to sills or bodywork required? Thinking of DIT inst

Recently picked up a RRS2 and want to add side steps. Miss them coming from a Disco4 which had them.

Thinking of a DIY fit, wonder if there are any mods required?

Thanks

For the average DIY'er, I think they are quite a job. You really need access to a lift because you can't jack up the car because the jack gets in the way and there's the residual worry of how you jack up the car once they are in place anyway. I believe (and I may be wrong) that the fixed steps are strong enough to support a jack but not the deployables. There is also a potential conflict with front mudguards.

If you look around Topix, you can find the fitting instructions which are all pictures and no words and may scare you. The instructions for the deployables run to over 100 steps and involve removing interior trim to run a cable harness, trim which may or may not come off and go back cleanly.

My dealer says it's a full day to fit the deployables... Mark

The deployable side steps on the RRS (and FFRR) can be left in place if you need to jack the car - I believe that you had to remove them on the old model.

I did have the dealer fit mine and they made a nice job of it. No interior panel issues, looks like a factory fit.

I fitted my own mudflaps and there is no problem with these and the deployable side steps, as long as you choose the right ones.

Fixed side steps now available, opted for dealer install after considering the DIY route and advice in the thread. Pleased with the overall fit, should be ok to get through a 7 foot garage door ok.....

Thanks.

They really donīt look as nice or as substantial as the old style.... nor do they suit the car as well..

Ordered my HSE Dynamic with 22" style 6's, red callipers and the fixed side steps. I think it looks fantastic, but I guess I am biased Smile. I am really please with side steps, they are useful for the female members of the family to get in and out, they are also really useful in the car park as I think they do help to protect the side of the car from others.
