Tyre size limits

I have steering wheel wobble/shimmy and my RR is currently in the dealers under inspection.

They have phoned me stating that the rear tyres which are 285/40/20 are the cause and need changing as they're too big. They also state the rear tyres will also ruin the transmission as they're too big and putting strain on the engine.

The difference between 275 and 285 is only 1.1% which I understand is within limits not to affect the drive.

I can't see how the rear tyre width would cause steering wobble anyway.

I've just had a hunter 4 wheel alignment and balance and the tyres are all 2 weeks old.

I'm sure if the steering rack is at fault they're going to blame the rear tyre size which I think is bull and a bit of a cop out.

Am I right in this or are Land Rover hitting the nail on the head so to speak?

Thanks.

It doesnt really matter im afraid.

LR state, certify and test the car on a set of tyres - if you dont adhere to that spec then its your fault...they tell you not to do it.

This is regardless of whether the fault is related and thats a difficult one

A final point tolerances are tight in a modern car, they dont always have massive safety margin's like days of old...so its feasible.

Either-way - until you adhere to the spec you wont get far (a bit like putting the wrong type of fuel in Wink ) Mike

Best bet then is to buy two correctly sized tyres and stick them on the rear.

Thanks.

That's the best bet...unless they then say damage was caused by the old tyres Rolling Eyes Big Cry

Good luck Mike
