Problem with spare wheel winch.

I have had to use the spare a couple of times in the past few weeks and now can't get the winch to go all the way up to secure the spare wheel in tightly. Is the cable caught up inside the mechanism and if so is there any way to free it off or will I have to have a new winch? For the time being I have put the wheel back under the other way round with the outside of the wheel facing the ground so the cable is tight, is this ok to do?

There are a couple of posts on here, one recently about how to repair the winch, might be worth a search. If your winch is tight you might be ok but I would want to be sure it's locked properly.

Keep an eye on it and get it fixed...could you not take the spare off for the mean time? Mike

JB,
I think you might find this thread more helpful: http://www.rrsport.co.uk/forum/topic30676.html?highlight=winch

If the cable is wound back on to the winch drum whilst there is no tension in the cable then it is likely to jam owing to overlapping turns. Those of us who sail keelboats are very familiar with this phenomenon and call it a 'riding turn'. I've not had the problem on my spare wheel winch but understand the first thing to try is remove the winch from the car (it's only four bolts) - secure it in a vice on a bench and then get someone to pull as hard as they can on the cable whilst you turn the winch operating bolt anticlockwise. If this doesn't work then try the dismantling procedure in the link.

To avoid future similar problems - never wind the winch up without any tension in the cable. 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

I had this problem, bought a secondhand one from Landrover Breaker. It did not work properly, sent it back and bought a new one.I took the old one apart to see how it worked and found the problem,. I had unwound the cable too far to get the wheel from under the car. And it had come to the end of the cable ,and started to wind the other way .It kinked the cable at the anchor end and jammed the whole thing up. I tried to straighten the cable but it would not go into the groove again.Solution Dont wind up without tension on cable, and dont unwind to far when taking spare off Big Cry itisme

No the spare is inside and has a internal winch type strap thing to get it out of the boot.

Oh unless you go for seven seats then you dont get a spare. Mike

Disco 3/4 RR Sport wheel winch repair.
I know its been done to death, but I have repaired my wheel winch and have the procedure with photos in PDF format. If anyones wants a copy let me know and I will email it to you. I cannot attach it here unfortunately. The cable was kinked badly and the shaft was spinning in the housing. It works fine now. I have posted this on the DISCOUK site as well.
Good luck from OZ. Thumbs Up
