I'm in the process of buying a kayak and I currently do not have a roof rack on my RRS. Any experience or recommendations on best buys?

Biggles used to have the LR roof rails on his, the only downside is that as soon as you want to fit rails of ANY type, the plastic runners on the roof panel are then PERMANENTLY altered.


That's what I understand to be the case anyway, if anyone knows otherwise I'd love to know.

Yes that is correct. You have to drill holes in the plastic trim to access the nuts below. The rails are then bolted down to these.

I also understand that a new set of plastic runners only cost about £25 anyway. I don't know if this is a pair or per side. Even so, when you come to sell your RRS, you could return the roof back to normal. I sold mine with the rails fitted, as the new owner preferred the look with the rails on. Matt

RRS ownership for 1 yr, then D3 for 2 yrs. Then cut back to old bangers and working my way back up through two Peugeots in 6 months. Now got Saab 9-5 2.3t and enjoying the performance!

Davis...I would not touch those with a ten foot pole! Abrasion is the word that comes to mind. If you have any dust or grit on those large footpads, by the time to you get to wherever you're taking that kayak and back home again you'll have two large abrasion marks on your roof...the ideal carrier ensures you have no load contact with the paint on your car. Hence, rails, then cross bars, then your load.

I can't imagine that the roads out to kayaking country are all paved and smooth out in Tahoe....

I do find the LR roof rails ugly not to mention the limited option on cross bars. Excellent observation, I too am concerned about damaging the finish. The instructions call out the potential for abrasion. The solution (they suggest) is to clean both the pads and roof in advance to insure this does not happen. Now, as a result of this project, I notice that virtually "every" SUV on the road comes equiped with roof racks. Next step, purchase a new set of diamond tip drills...
