Not sure if this has already been suggested but on another site I look at there is a "View first unread" button at the top of each thread. This means that when the thread has grown, possibly to several pages, you can skip straight to the new bits.
Your "New Posts" button actually works much better than most sites where you have to go to each folder separately to see what's unread, but the skip suggestion would make it even smoother.

I've been looking into this, and it seems that there isn't a way to do this with phpBB 'off the shelf' - I'll have a look to see if there's a patch to add what you're after  Like this site? Buy some RRSPORT goodies to show your support!
