7 pin and 13 pin dual wiring possible?

Can a car be dual wired to have an old fashioned 7 pin alongside the new 13 pin electrics?

Or is it one system or the other

I ask because the ATC system on newer vans require the 13 pin plug to work, but I have bike racks and trailers on the older 7 pin socket also.

And before anyone says, the adapter does not work with the ATC system! RRS gone

Not too sure awd, but I know you can get 13 to 7 pin converter plugs, but I guess you loose some functionality Question Confused
I used one of the converters when we used a friends 4 bike rack on my RRS, but I guess a caravan has more requirements. ON THE WAY: BMW F21 M140i

The only way you could dual wire is to tap in to whichever you fit and run a second set.

But i wouldnt recommend that for a range of reasons including the system getting confused as you tend to set it for one type or the other.

Why not get the modern 13pin and an adaptor? i have the 13 Mike

I use a twin to 13 adapter for my new van, easier than purchasing another set of highly priced LR electrics and I don't need to worry about the bike rack too

Cheers for the replies Thumbs Up

Ref the adaptor. I've been told the Alko ATC system does not work with them, only with the full 13 pin install

Is this correct? RRS gone

as long as you dont connect two plugs at same time (no usual) you are ok if you "double" the electric installation, that is, double wire from the car to the 7 an to the 13 pin socket.

im thinking too in doing this, because I hate the hole in the bumper when you take the cover off, and looking at the wires it is opnly a matter correct wires joined to the existing 13 pin to the 7 pin new socket wires.

Info: 13 pin socket have itself in one plug the functionality of the 7 pin black AND white sockets when BOTH plugged. if you dont need charging for example, white socket is not a must, because 7 pin black socket have itself the basic functions and light to be road legal. (i mean lights, side indicators, brake light, etc...)

13 Pin has an additional feed i thought - so i could believe something wouldn't work going from the Black/White 7 to 13 pin via an adaptor.

Which is why i suggest getting the 13 pin and stepping it down (via an adaptor) to the old black/white.

I still wouldn't wire the two in...Remember the car also is configured for one type or the other...so there could be issues there.

Just fit the 13pin and get an adaptor Mike

7 pin pinout:

some info here, from LR, to the 7 pin and 13 pin mounting instructions, just trace back the wires to the rear left wheel arch and joint wires as needed form the mounted 13 pin installation to the new 7 pin black plug.

you could also look at this:
http://www.pfjones.co.uk/towbar-wiring-kit...OA73WdOenA

but this systems are based on a non standard installation, with no dealer tow plug activation. it mayb could give you some ideas. but with all the other you could do the dual installation without any problem

It depends which model you have

There are 4 wiring groupings, which change where and how the connections are, from memory:
Pre 2010 - This included Fuses, still had a connection in arch and with spare wheel
2010-2011 Same as above
2011 On - Just arch Connection
2012 On - no longer in arch

Dealer activation adds:
Tow Stability (or whatever its called)
Control of Reversing Sensors

In my opinion - when there are ready to use connectors, to butcher a perfectly good loom should preclude the person from breading

If you are going to butcher something - when you fit the kit on older models you will have fitted a bridging loom...destroy that, its like this:

cheers again.

The main issue is I need a 12v constant feed (standard on the 13 pin). Thus why the older plug with an adapter does not work. RRS gone

My adapter works with my alko ATC, Everytime I plug it in the system can be heard and the light goes a solid green

My dad has had both adapters twin car to 13 and 13 to twin caravan and both worked fine with his ATC

That's very interesting Nick.

So your black 7 pin, plugged into a 13 pin adapter, then into the Swift, activates your ATC? RRS gone

Yes, I have twin on the car, and the adapter plugs straight in to the caravans 13 and the ATC activates

I was given the adapter by a Freel2 member, I'll pm him to see if it needed altering Or anything Idea
