Alternator burnt out, how long did yours last.

Sadly my TDV6 alternator started to burn last night when I parked the car in the drive at home, spotted the smoke and horrible acrid plastic smell and quickly removed the positive from the battery, which stopped a fire. Took the AA 2.5 hours to come out to look at it only to tell me what I already knew, that it had a major short circuit. Car has now been recovered to my local garage for a new Alternator to be fitted today. The car has only done 40,000 miles so should the alternator go wrong at such a low mileage? PS The AA man said is this a 2006 -2007 model year (which it is) so there is a known problem!

Mine gave up at 60,000 miles. 2007 v6. A slow death, the non charging light came on when on the motorway, but got home and local independent swapped it.

Car came back yesterday, all running smoothly. Question do the alternators fail more often on Range Rovers than any other car on the road?

My 2006 Disco 3 went at 90K. Electrical burning smell and battery light came on. I believe the issue is the diode pack which is part of the alternator. Easy enough to replace but you need the viscous fan spanners to get the fan off.

23,000 miles on TDV8 - my dealer reckoned a non-standard battery (100 a/hr) presumably fitted by the previous owner's dealership, was not compatible with the charge controller and led to the alternator's early demise.

Alternator and battery changed by my dealer under warranty with no hassle.

Interestingly the new battery, although rated lower at 90 a/hr, actually spins the motor faster at start-up!

My altenator packed up on Monday at 54K miles. Battery light came on and stayed on in the dash. New one fitted along with a belt and when they were at it ,the belt tensioner bearing was bad ,it replaced also.....
Should it not have lasted longer???got no abuse.

I had to get mine changed at 39000 miles and the cost form a none LR dealer was £365.00 all in. This was a replacement LR part and not a new one. I was told that a new LR one would cost around the £600 mark. Shocked Shocked
Worked well for the 3 days I had it before I sold the car.... Rolling Eyes It is what it is and I am what I am....

Whiny sound with revving is usually the air con clutch. Or could be one if the bearings for the aux belt usually the tensioner.

As for the alternator, mine went at 116k so it does seem quite random when they will fail. Thumbs Up Bodsys Brake Bible

86.000 KMS or some 50.000 Miles.

believe the battery was naggered which meaning the alternator had to charge permanently.
had Airbab light coming on every once and a while.

changed battery and alternator and all faults are gone too
