Hankooks W rating

Hi guys,

Time for 4 new tyres. After doing all the research I decided on the Hankooks, and went to order from Black Circles..

They only have the Ventus ST RH06, with a W rating. I'm coming off a Y rated Conti.

Can anyone advise or suggest if the W is ok?

Cheers,
S

W is 168mph. For the non-SC RRS, the homologated speed rating is H (130mph) so W is obviously fine.

Of more importance is the load rating which, for the RRS, is 106 so you want the tyre to be 106W or better.

The speed rating is the speed at which the tyre will run at maximum homologated load for 10 minutes (that's the time they run them for in the test). 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

I have same tyres and they are great but be aware some dealers, ie York refused to carry out some warranty work because they are not the standard tyres that they come out of the factory, wonkers, and Land Rover did not want to know also wonk Twisted Evil ers.

Could insurance companies be a bit arsey if fitting non standard spec tyres even if the speed rating is crazy?

If they are the correct size/speed rating/load rating then the insurance company shouldn't be worried.

LR voiding a warranty because a different tyre that still met the size/speed/load ratings is probably worth a threat of legal action. For example, what if the car maunfacturer says it must be tyre X by company Y and then company Y stop making that tyre. What then? 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

I can assure you I threatened them with all sorts but would not budge.

In which case the op shouldn't switch to a W rated tyre as the cars come with Y rated.

Just looked at the manual for the 2006 and it does state that the 19in tyre should be Y-rated which is 186mph. Which is amazing considering the car can only do 130mph.

In the 2007 manual, there is a bit about off road tyres with speed ratings of Q or T have limited speed limits. Which suggests that LR allow for lower rated tyres.

Equally strangely, the car the RRS is based on - the D3 - has H or V rated tyres shown in the manual for 19inch rims.

All very strange.

I have had an ARB bush replaced so far and the rear dynamic ARB is due to be replaced (both under warranty) and I've got 255/55/19 111H fitted (so wrong size and speed rating although a higher load rating). I guess it comes down to the dealer and how anal they want to be when talking to the warranty work approvers. Once the dealer has flagged it, I can see why LR would step back from the claim.

So, back to the OP - looks like you should stick with Y rated tyres. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Thanks for the responses guys.

I spoke to LR in Reading today and they pointed to their tyre supplier who in turn said the Hankooks are fine.

I'm taking the risk on the basis that if LR later argue over any warranty work I'll say it was their preferred supplier who advised me!
