United Kingdom 2006 Range Rover Sport Supercharged Zermatt Silver
20 inch spare wheel

I have a deep hatred and loathing for "space saver" tyres.

What's the point (apart from saving the manufacturers a few quid)?

Imagine being in the South of France in the evening, you have to get back for the last ferry, when pop! your tyre goes. The rest of the journey at 50mph max, and you look ridiculous with your skinny tyre on.

RRS's with 20" wheels are delivered with a 19" "space saver" spare wheel (max speed 50mph).

The handbook says that you shouldn't put a punctured 20" wheel back under the car because it can mark the face of the wheel.

BUT

I've just successfully mounted a 20" s/c wheel (with fully inflated tyre) under the car with no problems whatsoever. There's plenty of space and the 4 rubber bumpers sit very nicely on the tyre and hold it equally as well as the 19" spacesaver.

I would imagine that if the tyre was punctured, then the rubber bumpers would push the tyre onto the rim and allow the alloy to come into contact with the underside of the car, so just as long as you don't put a punctured wheel under there, you're o.k.

Hope this helps someone.

Bob. RRS 4.2 S/C. Zermatt. Tints. Stormers. 150+ paint defects, wonkey bonnet, scratches, detached doorseal. suspension faults. To sum it up, a 60k pile of cr4p!

United States 2006 Range Rover Sport 4.4 V8 HSE Chawton White

In North America our spares are regular, full size 19" tires mounted on a steel rim (at least on 4.4 liter HSE models, I believe the same size is provided as a spare on SC with 20" wheels, but am not 100% sure), so no speed restrictions for us in case of a flat. However, because it is full size, the wheel does stick out a bit more than necessary from its well under the car...

I've kept the standard 19" spare.

If the unfortunate happened, I'd put the Stormer in the boot. Runner up - 2009 Best Avatar Award Sad

I guess the speed restricted beacause S"C has 275/40 R20 wheels, so if you are using the spare 255/50 R19 wheel you have to drive carefully. 2014 Mercedes-Benz S500
