Octane ratings

While filling my RRS today with ($3.49 a gallon) 91 Octane rated gasoline, I noticed beeds of sweat on my upper lip as my eyes were rolling along with the gas pump meters $60.00 tab!

Forgive me if this has been discussed previously, is there any experience or thoughts on running 89 octane? I suspect the trade off with regard to performance and deposits on the valves etc. are not worth the modest savings. However, there may be some of us who are not having any problems as such Question

Belgium 2006 Range Rover Sport TDV6 HSE Java Black

Mate! $3.49 for unleaded petrol is a bargain! I'm paying $5.20 USD a gallon for diesel. Filling my wife's car with unleaded petrol (95 octane rating, Super is 98 in Belgium) costs me about $6.20 a gallon.

Fuel in the UK is even more expensive (the same perverted logic that makes it so expensive to fill your tank in Norway - another oil producing nation).

To your point however, octane levels are related to the compression ratios of your engine. I am assuming that you are running either a 4.4 or a S/C RRS in the U.S..

If you use low octane fuel in a high compression engine your fuel explodes rather than burns and this combustion is both too early and incomplete. The result is a potential loss of power, risk of engine damage over time and deteriorated fuel economy. I suspect therefore that you would not only offset any savings but accrue longer term costs. 2006 Range Rover Sport TDV6 HSE, Java/Ebony/Cherry, Privacy, Sunroof, PTI, Premium Sound, SatNav, Cold Climate, Tow kit, CarStyle coded grill and vents, Tasmods, Stormers, JE Exhaust, Autobiography badge

$6.70 per US Gal last time I filled up in the UK. Last May I was paying $2.50 in NW Washington (state rather than city) and loved to comment on how cheap US gas was. Think yourselves lucky U don't have our politicos ruling you! Evil or Very Mad

Am I right in thinking that the TDV6 is NOT Bio-Diesel compatible?

Slightly off topic but fuel related.........

I remember Tim saying that he thought I might have issues in CY with the grade of fuel and sulphur deposits.

Just found out that they have regular, and low sulphur diesel Thumbs Up

Also found out that in Paphos, the LR 'Dealer' is just a showroom and the 'Proper' workshop etc. is in Limassol! Sad Runner up - 2009 Best Avatar Award Sad

Biodiesel is certainly not an option - they love to talk about the higher cetane ratings but fail to mention the 4C gel point. And you cannot run on cooking oil either, unlike most Japanese diesels! MudallOverit and I were at an offroad weekend in April where 2 of the Mitsubishi Pajeros were running cooking oil and diesel mix, and it really does smell like a mobile chip van has just passed when they are nearby! 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Agree with Josh, BP Ultimate is more expensove but I find that I get an extra day out of a tank, you definately can feel difference in performance once you have run a full tank through the car and you get less smoke

BP Ultimate and Shell Optimax Diesel seems to be almost impossible to buy in Central Scotland. There are lots of places selling the Petrol versions but not diesel.... 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Same here, one in Newport that I'd have to make a special trip to get, same for the one in Cardiff. www.petrolprices.com now has it so that U can put in premium diesel to help in the search. It shows Total garages as doing prem diesel at near "normal" prices (alarm bells suggesting might be a mistake), one is handy so will pop in to have a look.
