Real-world MPG for the early V8's?

Out of interest, what real-world MPG do you guys get from you V8 RR Sports? Specifically the 05/55/06-reg cars, so 4.4 V8 or 4.2 S/C V8 engines.

My BMW 330Ci is pretty good on fuel - averages 28mpg dinkling round locally, but around 32mpg on my new commute of 80 miles up the A5 at a steady 80mph, so the 160 mile round trip costs £30.

On that same journey, what can I realistically expect to achieve from either V8 and what would it cost to do the 160 miles be in £'s? Just trying to weigh up if an LPG conversion (on a 4.4) would be worthwhile!

160 miles in my car would be about £70 quid......mpg low 20's at best, pottering arund town, 13-16. stick foot down and i have seen 8mpg.

lpg seem a none starter these days, lpg is about 75p and a good conversion is about 3k so thats a lot of fuel just to get back your initial investment.

A mate has just sold his 2005 4.4 and he got 12/14mpg round town, and 18/20mpg on a run. FF 4.4 V8 Soooo looking forward to this bad boy

My 09 4.2 v8 supercharged averages 12 to 14mpg around town.....best i've had so far on a run was 17mpg If it doesnt scare you it isnt heavy enough

My understanding is that the 4.4 V8 was such a bad compromise in terms of performance and fuel economy that the TDV8 was developed to replace it. This gives similar performance (27bhp down but 50% more torque) with reasonable economy. The 4.4 is/was effectively in the RRS for the US market because they don't do diesel to any great extent.

I get c.22mpg in mixed urban / lane driving, c.28mpg at constant-ish 60mph A-road runs and c.25mpg on fast mway runs from my TDV8. Compared to quoted 4.4 figures hereabouts one can see why the 3.6 was brought in to the range.

I would love to be able to run a 5.0 S/C though Thumbs Up 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Hmm, not as good as I hoped I must admit! So mid-high 20's are out of the question in a 4.4 V8? - Range Rover Sport 4.4 V8 HSE G4 Challenge vehicle (FOR SALE)

Just revisiting this thread and looking back it is unclear what engines the various figures relate to!

Specifically the 4.4 V8 only what sort of MPG do people get at a constant 70mph and again at say 80/85mph, please?

Also, roughly how much does it cost to fill these days (not sure on tank size) and how many miles do you expect to see from a tankful?

Mike_C, looking at other posts, I guess you need to factor in the addition of a roof rack and MTR tryes in terms of fuel economy? If you are going the G4 route then the best bet is to ask the question on the Disco3 site as I know that G4 owners there car tell you MPG with and without the roof rack on and what improvement normal tyres gives you. I know it's not a RRS, but there are some V8 D3's next door.

The TDV8 was brought in to replace the thirsty 4.4 V8 petrol and even we struggle to get 25mpg+

You'll be loking at high teens to very low 20'..and as James said..the G4 will be running MTR rubber and racks which will knock another 2 mpg off those figures easy.

Motorway... constant 70mpg... maybe 24mpg?..but I can get 28 on the motorway and STILL only average 24.5 Mr. Green RRS gone

Aaah, but there's a couple of things to factor in here:

1. I don't want to sink £30k into a TDV8

2. I much prefer the drive of the 4.4 V8 over the TDV6 - and the economy difference isn't dramatically different

3. The G4 I am looking at has two sets of wheels and I will be running the road wheels/tyres day to day, just putting the MT/R's on for Morocco and weekends away.

4. I may also keep the roof rack off most of the time, again refitting it for Morocco and trips away. Most of my journeys are a steady 80 mile drive up and down the A5, so it running with a roof rack will knock 2mpg off the economy it's not worth it!

Based on 20mpg for the RRS 4.4 V8 vs 30mpg from my 330Ci it will cost me an extra £1k a year max, possibly as little as £600p.a. if I use the motorbike more than I do currently. At that rate, an LPG conversion would take 2.5-3 years to pay for itself, so looks like I will just commit to spending more money on fuel and make the most of it before we all run out!! Range rover supercharged Vogue

I had my Supercharged Vogue for 18 months the trip indicated that I'd averaged 17.2mpg over this time. For every £10 you stick in you will get approximately 28 miles.

When I first got it I took it on a 250 mile round trip to Center Parcs. I stuck to 70mph and I averaged 22mpg. I took my Cayenne Turbo on the same trip, at the same speed and averaged 26mpg, although the Cayenne is worse around town - Performance and quality wise the Cayenne is in a completely different league.; I was really disappointed with the quality of the Range Rover and watch out for the oil leaks on the Supercharged versions.

As for the 4.4 v8; forget it; you will see the same mpg as the supercharged version, but with worse performance. It may be worth noting that my friend has the Range Rover Sport TDV8; it's a great engine, but don't expect big MPG, as he is only getting 22mpg when driven carefully. When the difference in petrol costs are taken into account, this is almost the same as the supercharged version - I would go for the supercharged version, even over the TDV8!!
