Warning - Recovery point covers

Yesterday, after reading what the D3 guys had said about loosing the plastic covers and front trim that covers the front and rear recovery points, I removed mine, as did all the D3 guys. When it came time to come home I got the rear cover on no problem.... but the front one was a b*gg*r especially as one of the little white plastic retaining clips had fallen out of the front X member. Another job to be fixed this week.

If you do take yours offroading be prepared for the plastic spoiler things in front of the spare wheel stowage to scrape a lot.............. I had never experienced this before offroad but on the rutted sections of the LRE track I seemed to scrape them a lot. The LRE guys told me that when they have finished with a D3 or an RRS they are usually totally mangled and have to be replaced.
So if you are looking at a used RRS and want to know if it has been offroaded take a look at the condition of these 2 plastic bits............. they are very easy to see without getting under the car, but it is best to put the suspension into Offroad height to make it easier. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Nice point Tim, but surely a wily dealer salesman might also know this and have them replaced in order to hide a car's history? L319 D4 HSE

The phrases "OUT OF SIGHT........." and "What you don't see you don't know about" spring to mind RR. How many propsective RRS owners are going to get down on their hands and knees in the dealers' yard to look underneath or even be anorakish enough to know about looking there!
I know from experience that if you are buying a 2nd hand FFRR it is absolutely essential that you look underneath - a lot more of them go offroad than people realise, and it isn't just across the parking lot at Ascot either, more like across the grouse moors in the Highlands. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Not as much as I should but then I have a Defender as well and that is for bashing up offroad.

My Sport has actually lasted longer before going offroading than the FFRR did - it was off into the wilds within the first 2 weeks of ownership and other than some scratched paint it suffered no damage.

When I sold the Freelander to buy the FFRR ther was some damage to that, like a ding in the driver's side sill, scuffed front bumper and sumpguard but nothing serious. I part-exchanged it for the FFRR and I know that the dealer didn't repair the dinged sill...................... he just added some chromed side tubes to hide the damage. I know this because I have since seen the car and chatted to the new owner, who is made up with the car, has taken it offroading as he goes canoeing/kayaking and can get to places others cannot go in it. I didn't have the heart to ask if he knew about the car's passed history as he was keeping it in such a lovely condition! 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Sometimes though the dealers get their come-uppance.

Years ago my dad was part exchanging a RR Classic for a new one, the salesman was a short guy and could not see the roof when he stood next to the car, so little did he know there was a large crease diagonally across the entire roof panel where my dad had accidentally felled a small tree on it.

The salesman was fired as a result of missing this minor point as it cost the dealership a few grand to replace and repair before they could sell it on again.
