Buying Advice....please

Hi all,

I am new here and also put a "hello" post in the Welcome forum.

I am in the market for a used RRS with a budget of around £18k to £24k

Looking around, this should get me a well looked after TDV6 HSE with less than 60k miles.

I have a few questions though....

1. Are there any known issues with these cars that I should look for ?
2. What are the general things to check when viewing ?
3. Any essential options, over and above the standard spec which tends to look quite comprehensive ?
4. Is a pre-purchase inspection common with these cars ? If so, are there any recommended inspectors ?
5. Economy. Parkers states average mpg is around 28-30mpg. Is this people's experience with these cars ?
6. What is the typical servicing cost at an independent specialist ?
7. What is the recommended servicing schedule on these eg every year or every 12k miles or 2 years etc ?

Sorry for all the questions but I do like to be forewarned and forearmed.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks Thumbs Up Proud owner of a 2008 TDV8 HSE.....and an Audi A3 2.0T DSG Cab and a Porsche 911 Turbo (Mercedes W208 320 CLK and Mercedes W124 E220 Estate now gone)

Thanks for your response Iain.

With regard to the service interval of 15k miles, is there any time limit within which you need to have it done eg 15k miles or 2 years, whichever is sooner ?

The TDV8 does sound like the better car in terms of balance between power and performance, my issue though is that I don't think I can get one with £24k Sad

What are the TDV6 and (TDV8) engines like with regard to high mileages ? Pretty robust or start needing work at 100k+ ? Proud owner of a 2008 TDV8 HSE.....and an Audi A3 2.0T DSG Cab and a Porsche 911 Turbo (Mercedes W208 320 CLK and Mercedes W124 E220 Estate now gone)

Thanks for the reassurance !

The usual response is don't go for the TDV6, it is underpowered, go for the TDV8.

Great if you can afford one though Rolling Eyes

What kind of mpg are you getting on yours ?

Also, any feedback on my other questions ?

I have a disco 3 with the tdv6 engine nothing wrong with it nice and torquey we are just lucky

15000 or yearly i do beleive let me check tho the disco is on 80000 miles no smoke no rattles just regulary serviced dont forget the engine is similar to the the jag diesel engine

What either one you get both will be nice to drive i have service on mine on wedensday and let you know what the cost will be

The discovery does 22-23 around town and is a tdv6 engine and about 35 on a run

Running costs on tdv6 compared to tdv8 will be better

Thanks for all the replies so far guys.

Sounds like the TDV6 is OK and the mpg is not too scary.

I used to own a Freelander 2 Diesel and I wasn't that impressed with its economy given it was 2 litre hence why I wanted to check re the TDV6.

Any thoughts or feedback on my other questions:

5. .....
6. What is the typical servicing cost at an independent specialist ?

FL2 should return 35mpg, you will never get the same in a RRS

TDV6 in the real world will return 28-30 tops (unless you have straight roads, no traffic and no hills around your way)

I'm talking averages here not "one off" trips on the motorway before I get flamed Laughing (I can get 28-30 in the TDV8 if I zero my counter and bumble along at 65..but who wants to to that Very Happy) RRS gone

I am sure there was something wrong with the FL2 I had then. I am currently driving a 1998 320 CLK and the economy on this is better than the FL2 ! Proud owner of a 2008 TDV8 HSE.....and an Audi A3 2.0T DSG Cab and a Porsche 911 Turbo (Mercedes W208 320 CLK and Mercedes W124 E220 Estate now gone)

The fuel consumption on my MY10 TDV8 is 22.8mpg and this comprises mostly open countryside driving. Best I have ever seen was 25.8mpg and that was on a motorway run with the readout set to zero before we started. People tell me it will "get better when the engine loosens up" and "avoid Supermarket diesel" but frankly I think this is as good as it gets. My Alpina B5 Touring (supercharged & turbocharged 4.4 V8 petrol, 530bhp, 700nM, 205mph) returns .................. 22.8mpg! The E-Type gets 18mpg - I seem to be stuck in a 20mpg world.

If you are concerned about fuel costs and the planet avoid the TDV8; if you are a hooligan however ................. '10 Range Rover Sport TDV8
