Raised Intakes for RRS and D3

Now here is a question to get you thinking............. why is it that when there is an "intake" apperture on each wing of an RRS and D3 that you only need one raised intake/ snorkel? I know that one side is an "intake" and the other side is an outlet, but there cannot be that much pressure difference across the width of the engine bay to stop water getting into the engine - especially if you stall.
In the old days long long ago some V8 Land Rovers (as in Defender type Land Rovers) had a snorkel/raised intake on each side. A Carbon Footprint is the mark a lump of coal makes when it's dropped on the ground.

Just an intake on one side on a D3, nothing on the other

I thought the second one on an RRS was just a dummy for the looks

Thanks for that.................. I have also read somewhere (on D3 I think) that there are no seals when you fit the D3 raised intake so that would mean that it is only a raised intake and not a "snorkel" thus not allowing any greater wading depth............... A Carbon Footprint is the mark a lump of coal makes when it's dropped on the ground.

It's designed to reduce the amount of dust entering the engine primarily, it is sealed but not to a great extent, just a foam gasket so it will stop some water from entering but not a full on dunking.

To be honest if you've got water up to the windows then you've got water in the heater vents (so potentially in the cabin) and battery boxes (where a lot of the electrics live) too so unless you've done some serious preparation you really don't want to go there!

Slimer have already been down that road.................. fortunately it was in my Tdi300 Defender with no drownable electronics! But it did cost me two new rear hubs as LR don't use waterproof grease and at the time I didn't have extended axle breathers and a viscuous coulping for the cooling fan! I wasn't intending to go up to the roof with water.................. will have to limit my deep wading to wing intake height! A Carbon Footprint is the mark a lump of coal makes when it's dropped on the ground.

Afternoon Group,(well in Aus anyway)
This is my first post to the group, so hello all & Congrats on an extremely well run site, easy to nav & easy to understand..anyway enough grovelling.
Very Happy Wink
In Aus we are still waiting on the Raised air intake/snorkel & are wondering if its available yet. I have a lot of customers wanting/demanding them yet are not available through spares yet, we keep getting told they are still inproduction &/or testing. Sad

Does anyone have pictures of them yet apart from the ones on the G4 vehicles.?

Thanks 01 D2 Bonatti TD5

Sniegy, welcome!

The raised air intake is available for sale through some US dealers, and it's one expensive piece of plastic: http://landrover.niello.com/cgi/catalog/2006022314542742

The link to the LRNA site is interesting Umberto, LRNA claim the raised intake is suitable for deep water wading...............

Quote:
G4 EDITION RAISED AIR INTAKE
This raised air intake is designed help to keep you going through deep water and dusty conditions. Raises the enginges air intake up high away from dusty off road conditions. Features a pre-filter for dusty conditions. Utilizes existing air intake fixings

Buy it now for $569.00

How deep is "deep"?.......................... up to the waist line or just to the intake level? A Carbon Footprint is the mark a lump of coal makes when it's dropped on the ground.

Thanks Umberto B,

I have seen the G4 variant on photos but still to see one in the flesh.

Also Tim i agree, How deep is deep. I wouldnt want water any higher than the pretend air intake on the l/h/s..
There are a lot of electronics & connectors behind the battery, & just incase there has been cables sent through for aftermarket wiring behind the CJB (central junction box) it gets wet, u go nowhere!!!! Crying or Very sad

Looks likw we still have wait until we get the all ok...

The vehicle is only designed to handle the advertised wading depth... with or without the snorkel. Pity your poor vehicle electronics and engine.

As I posted elsewhere (same applies to LR3):

"The snokel (actually a "raised air intake") won't really improve your wading depth... I wouldn't exceed it for more than a few moments.

Most raised intakes are more for dust/dirt/debris... but since the intake is already high and to the side on RRS (and LR3), it has to be an extreme scenario. It might also help a bit if water is hitting/splashing you from the right side... like when crossing a river. Less chance of water entering the intake."

What you need Tim is one of those large rubber Johnnies on an extending frame they used to put on army tanks for river crossings. Fits around the waist of the vehicle and extends up above it creating a dry moving island. MY08 RRS TDV8 HSE, Stornoway Grey, Ebony and Zabrano, sunroof, hybrid tv, premium ICE, rear E diff, privacy glass, side steps, mud flaps, S/Grey mirror covers, Venture shield, tasmods, smoked indicators, Larini sports exhaust, etc, etc.
