2005 Range Rover Sport TDV6 HSE Cairns Blue
Excessive rust/corrison on brakes

I have had my RRS since October and the brake unit (not the discs) seem to be excessively rusty. Is this common and accepted or is it jus becasue witth the alloys I have ( standard ones for the HSE TDV6) it is possible to see more of them than on a normal car. I understand, from the dealer that its usual on the discs themselves, due to water and heat but the unit itself surprises me on a car thats only 6 months old and has never been driven off road.

Just wondered if they were any more experienced Range Rover drivers who had more knowledge/esperience in this area.

[/b] Confused

Actually, mine are a little rusty... I noticed it within weeks really. Although it hasn't got any worse in the intervening 7 months though. Nothing to worry about, other than the fact it looks a bit odd.

Is this really something you should just shrug your sjoulders about?

This is a near as dammit £50k car.

You wouldn't accept it on any other car at this price, so why this one? Runner up - 2009 Best Avatar Award Sad

I tend to save things up until the service is required, if it's not anything showstopping/dangerous etc. I can't say I'm the world's proudest car owner - I don't wash them very often, I don't treat them with kid gloves. I suppose I know I'm offloading it in a couple of years and the problems can be someone else's....

Don't look at me like that Super!! Laughing

The dealer has offered to take photographs of them and send them to Landrover while its in tomorrow having the handbrake replaced (apparently causes the excessive whining I have recently experienced, which is also a reasonably common fault?)

Used to be a problem on my TD6 RR, but I've never suffered it on my Sport.... Howard I think a visit to your dealer is called for. There is a Tech Bulletin about excessive brake dust staining alloys on early cars but nothing about hubs. Sorry, cannot help any further than that. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it
2018 Melting Silver Mini Countryman PHEV - soon to be replaced
2015MY Corris Grey SDv6 HSE Dynamic, the best car I have ever owned, totally reliable only a cou0le of rattles in 3 years, now no longer in my care
Also in my garage is a 1996 TDi300 Defender 90 County HT made into a fake CSW

I'm out of school quite a long time now so I may have forgotten my basic chemistry, but am I not correct in saying that rust = ferrous oxide = "oxidation"? Ner Ner RRS TDV6 (gone)

Surely rust IS oxidation Question It's finally gone! Replaced with BMW 730SE in Sophisto grey Xirallic finish with Oyster (Ivory) and black interior. DAB, Climate glass, Ceramic iDrive and gear selector, power boot and iPhone Bluetooth pack - luvvin' it!

I miss my old RRS "bucket" rattling around but it just had to go!

Bingo Bango.

All brake parts that are made from metal that are not painted like the Brembo callipers are bound to rust.

Put it this way, unless you keep the car for 10 years, it's never going to be an issue for you, even after 3 years of rusting, they will still work ok, and if they don't , the warranty will replace them. L319 D4 HSE

Crying or Very sad I noticed some surface rust on rear N/S hub. None on the actual brakes yet though.

I'll get this sorted when either something more serious happens ( Shocked ) or 1st service but monitor in the mean time. Runner up - 2009 Best Avatar Award Sad
