Speed - I can afford a SC anyday what I cann't afford is the petrol. Seeing as a SC probably costs the same in the US as a diesel in the UK and gas in the states is so much cheaper I think you're talking out of your arse!

Why do Americans take offence so easily? Note to self avoid upsetting the septics! RRS 2.7 TDV6 HSE Zambezi silver,Alpaca.

Got to agree.

Most of the guys on here could afford to buy a S/C, but the cost of running one over here is HUGE! Also, I for one don't really want to spend that much of my life watching my money whizz away in a blur of digits, lining Mr. Shell's pockets.

Besides, it's generally f*****g freezing and raining over here and standing there, filling your car up so frequently is really unpleasant!

For reference, U/L fuel in the UK is approx $1.66 per litre. How much is it over there? 06 RRS TDV6 HSE, Java/Ebony, PTI, Running Boards, Privacy, S/C Grille/Vents, Stormers, Tasmods, Black Badge Soon...

It varies by area and State, sometimes dramatically. Here in California, where prices are often higher than elsewhere in the US due to specifically mandated formulations of our unleaded fuels, prices have climbed back near record highs, just under US$3 per US gallon for regular unleaded, and super unleaded grade reaching about $3.10/gal. That's about $0.80/liter (1 US gal = 3.8 liters).

It's not as dramatic a difference as it was when I moved to the States in the mid-80's (a gallon of unleaded was somewhere around US$1 back then!), but it's still 50% cheaper than in Europe, quite a discount... Diesel prices are currently about the same as super unleaded in SoCal, not much of an incentive to buy one - and diesel engines in most cars and SUVs are still verboten in our State anyway, due to strict emission regulations. I know you get substantially better mileage and I recall how diesel engines generally outlast their petrol equivalents in the long run, but you can see how diesels don't have the same appeal here as they do in Europe.

OT, I wonder how hybrids are doing in Europe as alternatives to diesels? Around here, Toyota cannot seem to build enough Priuses, they're all over the place. Besides being less thirsty at the pump than regular gas engines, these cars enjoy some modest tax credits and here in California you are also allowed to drive them on HOV (carpool) lanes regardless of number of occupants in the car, which makes them especially appealing to commuters perennially stuck in traffic - like me! Are these cars available in Europe at all, and how are they doing?

Even though they cost more than their regular engine twins (often offsetting the savings in fuel costs over the lifetime of the vehicle) and their real world mileage is often a lot lower than advertised, hybrid engines are starting to show up in traditional SUVs as well. Toyota already makes a few models, including its luxury Lexus RX, Ford sells a small one (the Freelander.) Therefore there are rumors of a hybrid engine possibly coming to some Land Rover models in the not-so-distant future...

They started selling to those people here too, except that most "sad tree huggers" also happened to be big time movie stars... So now everybody wants one.

There are plenty here in Scotland but they tend to be driven by "oldies", for day to day driving the Toyota Prius has been shown not to be the great green thing it was hyped up to be, and many smaller cars such as the mini Audi A2 and even some midsized diesel powered family cars here are better at saving the planet than the Prius. There is also a hybrid version of the Eastbourne Express (aka Honda Civic) now available in the UK.
We also have the Lexus R400h, a hybrid SUV-a-like thing with a V6 petrol engine as well as the lecky bits. A Carbon Footprint is the mark a lump of coal makes when it's dropped on the ground.

Tata TDv8 HSE - Stornoway/ebony and straight grain walnut with towpack, Tasmods and an HST grille. Coming soon LEDs in the headlights
Staying - Epsom Green Defender 90 for playing off road
