At the risk of getting flamed.... [Now nasty noises]

I have a 55 plate RRS HSE which I bought recently.

It's just developed a noise which seems to be from the nearside front, now I know people are going to say search the forum but I have and all I find is heaps of people complaining about knocking noises. My noise is not a knock, its a click/crack sound. Seems to happen at low speed when I turn to the left on uneven ground and sometimes on smooth ground if I brake and quickly let off, again at low speed. Sometimes it's just one click, other times I can get several clicks out of it. Can't say I've heard it when steering to the right but cant be sure on that.

Seems to be getting worse every time I drive it.

Any ideas?

Sounds like a CV joint (where driveshaft joins the hub) if it's whilst turning and getting worse. If it clicks in time with the rotation of the wheel the could be this or diff.

If it wasn't getting worse the I'd say it could be dry steering linkages, especially if worse in access mode on the suspension. That option isn't as serious as a CV or diff.

Definately worth someone looking at it.

Hmm actually after I posted this I went out and got a bang instead of a crack, back to cracking again now. Looks like it'll have to go to the garage. CV would make sense I guess, hope thats not too expensive to sort.

To add insult to injury the air suspension is lifting very slowly, a message comes up on the dash to that effect too. Big Cry

Does your car still have any of the dealers used car warranty left? If not then if you are anywhere in the Stirling Falkirk Edinburgh area then I can recommend a nonfranchise Land Rover specialist at Larbert, they can deal with any Land Rover, ancient or modern and have much cheaper labour than any of the local main dealers! 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it
2018 Melting Silver Mini Countryman PHEV - soon to be replaced
2015MY Corris Grey SDv6 HSE Dynamic, the best car I have ever owned, totally reliable only a cou0le of rattles in 3 years, now no longer in my care
Also in my garage is a 1996 TDi300 Defender 90 County HT made into a fake CSW

If you get it when you brake sharply, it could be worn wishbone bushes

If you are near Perth/Stirling area, I would have to recommend Strathearn Engineering. Used them a few times, seem to know their stuff, and labour rate is less than £40 p/h!

Thanks for your replies. I;ve been away so only just caught up. It's defintely getting worse so I need to get it looked at.

I did speak to Town & County in Aberdeen but their labour charges are Censored mental.

Presumably any decent mechanic should be able to sort it if it is a CV joint. I'm in Fraserburgh which limits me somewhat on selection of local garages, aberdeen is probably going to be my best be. Anyone know of a decent specialist in the aberdeen area?

Well I did speak to them but they don't have loan cars so just not an option unfortunately.

I took it to my usual garage and they couldn't find anything wrong, said I would have to wait for it to get worse.

Since then the problem has escalated, On saturday, I stopped to let some traffic through a narrow street and as I pulled away, a massive crack/snap (sounded fatal to be honest, felt it through the seat and steering wheel) before getting drive. Getting a few of these now, possibly not the same as the original problem as these noises are much louder and happen regardless of steering input.

Mainly it's noticable pulling away/applying power at low speed but I do think I feel it at cruising speed if I come off, then reapply throttle gently. Sometimes I drive it and it does it all the time, the next time I drive it, doesnt happen at all/often and the force of whatever is cracking seems to vary too.

It seems to me like there are times when you want to apply power but something is slack, just for maybe a second then something bites and takes up the power. It's at that bite point where I get the cracking/snapping sound.

Its booked back into the garage for weds but im worried that they wont find the problem. Difficult for anyone to find a problem unless you can show them. I have a 1000 mile trip next week and I really don't want to drive it like that.

I guess I'll get the garage to have a look at the diff? change the oil if they don't find anything and see what state the old stuff is in?

Any other ideas?

X5 3.0 sd in Space Grey, 20's, Dynamic Pack, Memory Pack, Media Pack, Tow Pack, Rear DVD, Panoramic Sunroof, Steps, 7 Seat Pack, Reversing Camera with moving lines, programmable park heat, etc etc etc - Gone

Range Rover Sport Santorini, privacy, dvd, towpack GONE!!!
