Oops my compressor is full of mud! WTF?

Sitting quietly in my Sport listening to the sound of nothing as I trundle out of the driveway towards the vineyards on a sunny autumn morning I was rudely interrupted by a loud vibration and grumble coming from under the car which pops in for a while then sods off and then drops in again unannounced to remind that something's rotten in the state of Land Rover.

Could feel the vibration coming from the compressor and had some brake probs so decided to just take it in to my local service guru to take a look.

Turns out the compressor cover box has filled up with mud on our last outing a few weeks ago.

Firstly I had wrongly assumed that this would be a sealed unit and made to take this kind of regular off-road activity.

Secondly, even though I use a gurney to wash down the underbody after every trip, there's no way that would address this problem.

Has anyone had a similar experience or know why this unit isn't sealed.

Its a common problem, well if you go off-road.

If you do a search over on disco 3 well documented. Also so tips like removing the foam inside and enlarging the drain hole at the bottom so you can wash it out better and the mud etc can drain away.

Yep I had to do mine too after hearing the noise. There are some great 'how to's' over on the Disco site listing the jobs to do after taking the car off road. There are also some suggested modifications you can make to stop this happening again. It basically involves making larger holes in the case! WINNER - 2009 ‘Just Doing What It’s Designed To Do’ Award

If your compressor case is full of mud it would be worth checking your intercooler. Two ways to clean it:

Rob's way: http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic19755.h...r+%2Bclean

MrH's way: http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic33058.h...r+%2Bclean

I have used MrH's way several times and a mountain of crud comes out every time. It's still not great and the fan works quite hard in the summer because the intercooler's performance is still impaired. I'm not such a fan of hooning around in the mud any more. Wink Every silver lining has a cloud

Seems like nothing has changed from the Discovery II - the SLS compressor also fills up with mud and dies a horrible death. Rolling Eyes 1999 Discovery II V8 auto
