Wheels - paint or powdercoat?

I had my 20"s refinished (repaint) about 2 weeks ago and have paint chips on rears already. I live in snow country so they lay salt/gravel on road for traction. which kicks up on to rear wheels. I am now thinking about powder coating. I was wondering if anyone has had this done and your thoughts? I also read some threads that said powder coating weakens the wheels???
Thanks again for everyones comments in past posts. I have had many Porsches, Mercedes but I have become obsessive about my Sport, it is truly a magnificent car!!...and to complicate things my wife just purchased a 2008 FFRR SC to which I am now obessing over because she treats her cars like a big purse and announced that all 4 of our dogs are welcome in her car...arghhhhhh!!!!
Cheers! Mike mike murphy

We powder coat our wheels at the customers request, In fairness it is a lot tougher and harder wearing than just paint. If a stone was to hit a powder coated wheel it would bounce off and not leave a mark, as opposed to a painted wheel it would just chip away straight away. Kahn Design Sales

Thanks Richard, When you powder coat RRS wheels, can you match the factory silver color? I notice
it seems to have a little metal flake in it? Thx! Mike mike murphy

Hi Mike,

Yes it is possible to add a metal flake into the powder coat, It won't be an exact match to the OE Land Rover Silver but a pretty close match can be achieved.

I have decided after getting my wheels done at least 10 times in 2 years - i am going to get them properly done - blasted and stripped and powder coated - found a place in West Hampstead to do all 4 for £325, which is a good price - but they need the car for 2 days - anyone think of anyone nearer to West London?? Nas? Or Viewise, any ideas??

Thanks

Powder coating will look and last much longer. Sounds like you want a finish that is top notch...your only choice then is to avoid the rattle can look, and get them nicely done. With sand blasting and powder coating from a top notch shope...expect to pay roughly $100 to $125 per wheel...well worth it. PJPR

Thank you! Going to give a try with a powder coating co in Twin Falls that has quoted $55 per wheel. Sounds
to inexpensive to me so will have discussion with them before I send down. Thanks again for input! Mike mike murphy

No worries...that price sounds like powder coating only possibly, without the sand blasting, but if it's both and it's good quality, it would be a great price. PJPR

Nick,

If the location is suitable for you, try BJV Engineering ( aka Wheelrefinishing.com I think), in Flaunden near Hemel Hempstead. you can take wheels and tyres in and they'll strip and rebuild them or just take wheels. They do a very good job and are not expensive, when I last used them anyway. I am sure they used to do work for Ferrari UK etc. Highly recommended.

Thanks mate - Hemel is a little too far out for me - think I will stick with the one in West Hampstead - i can get back to Richmond from there easily enough.....just want a really smooth finish to the wheels now - so many refurb companies, just sand and fill the damaged parts, and then spray and laquer the whole wheel again.....I just want them all stripped down, powder coated and looking like a wheel should....

Nick

As I recall from my days of restoring naily old classics and using powder coating quite a lot, the only negative I'd say of doing wheels is if you kerb them and split the coating, it'll begin to chip off and once water gets underneath it'll get worse. Does take quite a belt to chip it off though and as has been said up there somewhere, in general it's much more resiliant. Ex-G4 Challenge RRS HSE, BV55 YZE. Subtle shade of orange ! Just got my 20's back from powder coating and they look fantastic! Much better than the paint/clear coat that was done last month. I am going to have the 20's on my wifes FFRR done next. Cheers! Mike mike murphy
