I've noticed that my brakes have started to squeak when gradually slowing down. I took it to my local dealer who said they'd be a charge to take them apart and 'clean them' because that's what's likely to be the cause.

The car was purchased 6 months ago, I would have thought they'd have been checked if something around there needed replacing.

Mine do the same and started about a week or two after picking it up. Havent had a chance to get back to the garage as yet tho.

I've oly had mine for a month and it's doing the same yet it doesn't happen all the time. Any ideas why or could it be something alot worse

my back ones started doing this before the winter. It was just a build up of 'crap' between the pads and the discs. This is a combination of brake dust, road salt and rust (not the serious kind) that comes off wet discs if the car has been sitting idle for several days with water on the discs and rubs off when moved and the brakes are applied. I had my local garage (not the LR dealer) replace my rear pads as they were needing done anyway. He charged me £76 for new rear pads supplied and fitted. Brake squeal sorted and has not returned (since September). The stealers took £350 off me just to fit a set of front pads over and above the service at the last service interval. So the moral of the story is get the local specialist to do the brakes and not the LR dealer. Your local guy (if you get one that you trust) will also be able to blow out any crap between the discs and pads at minimal cost. The dealer will charge a kings ransom.

Mine have squeaked since I got the car, changed the pads and they still squeaked. Got a loaner from the main dealer with 600 miles on it and they squeaked too.

Just one of the many things you have to live with when owning a RR I guess.

I spoke to a technician today and he said that it's a known issue with the RRS brakes. He said it was something to do with a film forming on the disk or pads and pads not releasing correctly.

He said LR has released some modified brake pads which resolve the issue but are not covered under warranty as brake pads are wear and tear item.

Seems serious f&cked up that LR will acknowlege a fault and release an update but expect people to pay. Spending £35k + on a premium vehicle to have squeaky brakes is not a great service. Gone: RRS : HSE : TDv6 : 57 : Java Black : Ebony : 20"

Squeaking brake pads are caused by the pads vibrating as apposed to the pad squeaking on the disc, this can easily be fixed by applying brake pad grease to the back of the pad before inserting them or a thin cutting of cardboard or paper cut to the shape as the pads and paced between the pad and the piston  2010 Alaska white 3.6TDi v8, heated steering wheel, Ipod connection, Aribica extended leather, Digital TV, voice activation, privacy glass, Dynamic pack

Isn't this a MY10 specific problem? My new car squeak a lot, especially in reverse. Previous MY07 never did.

On my X5, it was actually written into the BMW maintenance procedure for changing the brake pads, that the BMW approved pad grease must be used tp prevent the brakes from sqeaking. You should be able to get this grease from the likes of Halfords, or Autosave I suppose.
