2008 TDV6 WHEEL ALINEMENT

Hello , got a 2008 TDV6 s , and just had the 4x4 wheel alinement carried out by a Landrover recomended garage , as when driving sraight the steering wheel sits slightly on the left hand side , thus making it not central.

Landrover said get the alinement done and that should cure it , NO it did not , so now it is booked in for them to remove the steering wheel and put it back on in the central location.

? Has anyone else had this happen ? Any advise / guidedance

Yes I had this, it took an age for the dealer and Land Rover Australia to correct! They kept blaming road camber... Who did they think they were fooling!!! Censored Evil or Very Mad

2 things to do before adjusting the steering geometry...

1. make sure the vehicle has a full fuel tank, and
2. put the vehicle in 'Geometry Set Mode'. Putting the vehicle into this mode
will make sure that the ride heights are controlled more accurately.

Removing the steering wheel and putting it back straight is not right.
They have to get the alignment done again and again!! Malaysia Boleh!

are there any special tricks to get it into Geometry Set Mode as the last tyre specialist I went to completely stuffed it up, but I wasn't able to tell them how to put it into Geometry mode and they didn't know anything about it? 2008 TDV8, Stornoway Grey with Alpaca premium leather, Adaptive cruise, Adaptive Bi-xenons, sunroof, Premium Nav, Premium ICE Logic 7, telephone, active locking rear diff, console coolbox, seat memory, powerfold mirrors, tow pack, window tint, dual battery, engel fridge, Goodyear Mud-Terrain tyres.

You've got to use the LR diagnostic tool (T4?), I'm afraid. Malaysia Boleh!

so that means that if the tyre place doesn't have the LR diagnostic tool, they can't perform a wheel alignment Question Confused 2008 TDV8, Stornoway Grey with Alpaca premium leather, Adaptive cruise, Adaptive Bi-xenons, sunroof, Premium Nav, Premium ICE Logic 7, telephone, active locking rear diff, console coolbox, seat memory, powerfold mirrors, tow pack, window tint, dual battery, engel fridge, Goodyear Mud-Terrain tyres.

They can do the wheel alignment but then it might not be that accurate.

LR's reasoning might be that the vehicle does move ever so slightly all the time and this will interfere in the alignment adjustments. The whole process of adjusting the front and rear alignments does take more that 2 hours, so what happens when the vehicle does its normal "self-levelling"?

Technically, I believe setting the vehicle in "Geometry mode' is actually locking the vehicle in normal height. Wink

Of course, the rest is up to the technician's competency!! Smile Malaysia Boleh!

Now why wouldn't LR just tell me that Evil or Very Mad I specifically asked them whether the alignment could be done in "normal" height as this is the setting that the car would be driven in normal conditions, and they said no it had be locked in "Geometry mode" and could only be done by a LR dealer. aaaaahhhhhh Big Cry Big Cry

That's it then, I'll go back to the same place I've used for all my previous cars as they've always done a brilliant job and I'll just tell them not to take it out of "normal height.

Thanks again Bobby for your insight. 640 - What I believe Bobby is saying, and per my understanding, is that even when in Normal height (or off road, or access height for that matter) the car has the potential to do a self correction of the height to level the car. The car will still tell you it is in normal height still, but will have moved within the tolerance for that setting, and this can introduce the inaccuracy into the alignment.

This so called 'geometry mode', in my layman's understanding, locks the car height at the required height and prevents the software from doing any self levelling corrections - e.g the hissing everyone hears when you switch the ignition off!

So unfortunately you still need to find an alignment place who has the tool to set(lock) the height, or go to a dealer first and pay them $60 for the 10 min job as I had to!! Even then as in my prior case it took them (the dealer) months to get it right! Evil or Very Mad

What LR should have done, is provide access to Geometry height for owners without having to pay dealers $60 for just for the privilege!

FYI, I was playing around with my new jack the other day, and whilst it was up and in off road height (per the manual) the suspension starting hissing - very scary! Shocked Rolling with laughter

2nd Rover is right.

Just found this...

Quote:
Four-Wheel Alignment

CAUTION: Make sure the vehicle is on a flat level surface.
CAUTION: Make sure the tire pressures are within specification.
CAUTION: Make sure that only the manufacturers' recommended four wheel alignment equipment is used.
CAUTION: Make sure there are no heavy objects in the vehicle.
CAUTION: Make sure the air suspension is set to NORMAL ride height.
CAUTION: Make sure the steering is in the straight ahead position.
CAUTION: Make sure the slip plates (turntables) are free to move before adjusting the geometry.

1. Check the tie rod ends, suspension joints, wheel bearings and wheels and tires for damage, wear and free play. Adjust or repair any worn, damaged or incorrectly adjusted components.
2. Check and adjust tire pressures.
3. Position the vehicle on a calibrated, level, vehicle lift.
4. Release the vehicle parking brake.
5. Using the approved diagnostic tool, check the air suspension control module for fault codes and clear as required.
6. Using the diagnostic tool, set vehicle to 'Geometry Set Mode', using the instructions below. Putting the vehicle into this mode will make sure that the ride heights are controlled more accurately.

Select the 'Configuration' tab
Select 'Set up and Configure'.
Select 'Air Suspension'.
Select 'Suspension Geometry Set Up'.
Select 'Tight Tolerance Mode'.

Follow the on-screen instructions until the set up process has finished.

fair enough then. guess I'll just get tyres fitted and then take the car down to the stealer so they can use their fancy equipment. It's just a shame that the nearest stealer is 30kms away from where I live. 2008 TDV8, Stornoway Grey with Alpaca premium leather, Adaptive cruise, Adaptive Bi-xenons, sunroof, Premium Nav, Premium ICE Logic 7, telephone, active locking rear diff, console coolbox, seat memory, powerfold mirrors, tow pack, window tint, dual battery, engel fridge, Goodyear Mud-Terrain tyres.

May be it is an idea to keep the motor running during the alignment. the car will stay on his normal height. Or do I see this wrong?

Yes, you do see this wrong. Laughing

The vehicle is always doing some minor height adjustments ever so subtly! Wink Malaysia Boleh!

It does make a difference not having it in tight tolerance mode. Had mine set without it in that and it's way out, too much camber at the front. Ex-G4 Challenge RRS HSE, BV55 YZE. Subtle shade of orange ! Now registered YZE481 G4RRS in Melbourne.
