product review for Aussie made MaxTrax for sand/mud/snow

Just spent a week on Fraser Island and feel the need to give a big wrap to the guys at MaxTrax.

I only bought two units (many people buy four), and they were incredibly capable and made for very fast recovery times.

They hadn't seen rain on Fraser for over 3 months and the fine powdery sound was boggy as hell.

While I only got to use them myself while I had the camper weighing me down on the couple of occasions I bottomed out in the deep ruts created by the large off-road tour buses, I did use them many time on other single vehicles that got bogged on the one lane tracks that cover the island.

Forget hooking up snatch straps - just pull out the tracks.

Wish I'd had a dozen sets on me - I could have sold them all Wink

I've also used them once in the mud and they made excellent exit ramps. 'Black Betty' Java Black RRS 07 TDV6

Cooper Zeon LTZ's 285/60/18's

I do occasionally get a very light rubbing on the inside rear guard but it doesn't seem to mark the tyres in any way.

They have been fantastic in all conditions so far. 'Black Betty' Java Black RRS 07 TDV6

Jimmy, I am thinking of running 285/50/20's on mine which have a very similar overall diameter. I have had these tyres on a Defender before so know they are great tyres.

What I was wondering was do you need to run Johnson Rods or a LLAMS control box when running these over sized tyres on a RRS? Also did you notice any affect on handling and performance when running oversized tyres?

Sorry for hijacking your thread but as I am new I am not allowed to PM yet! LR Defender 90 - gone

Hey Leigh,

I ran these for 12 months without either the Johnson Rods or the Llams.

I loved them enough to replace them with a completely new set once the old ones got down to about 25%. Probably could have run them longer but as I use them for fairly serious off-road as well as on road, I wanted maximum traction.

I am actually now using them as my daily driving tyres.

I have recently put in the Llams but only run it in off-road situations.

Thanks, I was hoping that would be the answer! I plan to get the LLAMS control box but was hoping the tyres would fit with the standard suspension set up without any issues.

The tyre size is about 3" more in diameter that the standard, did you notice any difference in fuel consumption, performance or handling when you moved to the larger tyres size?

I have been lucky enough to go to Fraser Island I am very jealous that you are able to take your car! I did one of the island tour buses, but would loved to have been driving myself and camping out there. The photos and videos look very good. LR Defender 90 - gone

You will always get an increase in fuel consumption with larger tyres with chunkier tread - there's just no avoiding that.

Having said that, I ran them n the Fraser trip and towing our camper I think we managed about 14L/100kms on the blacktop running at the speed limit all the way there and back which I think is very reasonable given our camper weighs in at about 1.2tonnes.

You notice that the on road dynamics aren't as good but for a reasonably heavy intermediate tread, these tyres are fantastic on road and reasonably quiet.

The large footprint is also awesome in the sand. 'Black Betty' Java Black RRS 07 TDV6

Thanks Jimmy. I appreciate it will increase consumption, just wondering if it was a big difference as the supercharged is already appalling! I'd say 14l/100km is pretty good towing, ive yet to tow my boat any where far but I expect it to drop into single mpg figures! Shocked LR Defender 90 - gone
