Another insurance question?

Always meant to find this out but always forget to ask.

I have fully comp insurance, (as do all with an RRS im sure).
Do i have to specify i want insured cover on any other car i touch.
Its annoying, as im only insured on my car and my dads Bmw, no other car.
There is a myth that goes around many people i know, and they say if you're fully comp, you have 3rd party cover on any car you drive (so long its insured itself) but thats Censored isn't it?
It clearly states on the policy doc, that the only car covered is the one on the policy and the policy holder is only insured to drive that car.
Is there an age limit or a certain criteria you have to fulfil to get this cover automatically, or do you have to ask for it and pay extra?

I know my parents are covered, and my brother in law seems to be as well..

You are covered 3rd party only if you drive another car. There are (I think) some new policies starting up that insure the driver and not the car, I've heard Admiral might be doing this. 2005 Zambezi TDV6 - Gone but not forgotten

Both my current and future policies cover me 3rd party for any car Kam (with owners permission), I can upgrade this to fully comp upon request. I know with Direct Line that this doesn't cost anything but you must notify in advance - not sure about LR insurance, will look over the quote again tonight.

I do seem to remember though that I didn't get this until I was about 26 / 27 though........I keep all of my old certificates (records of my car history!!) Will check back over the weekend and see when I started getting the cover Currently: Carbon Black 535d

That rings a bell - I think you automatically get 3rd party if you are over 25. But that was a while ago for a lot of us Wink so it could be the rules have changed since. I know my policy covers ME to drive any other car 3rd party only....

You are doing very well to get them to insure you at all Kam - I remember the pain trying to get insured on my S3 when I was 25....funnily enough, it was Direct Line! The RRS will be my first departure from them........ Currently: Carbon Black 535d

Agreed, if you are going to be a driving another car regularly get yourself insured properly on it... Handy though for driving your mate's car back home after he's been hit in the face with a golf ball. I speak from experience! Shocked

Define an emergency though..
surely say if i was driving our megane about and wasn't named on the policy..
if i got pulled over and asked to produce my documents, i could say anything, here is my fully comp insurance for my car, oh i was driving the megane as mine was out of diesel, and we had run out of bogg roll so i had to get down the shop!!

It's not illegal to drive a car with 3rd pty only insurance, so no issues with plod. Just that if you crashed it, you'd only be insured for the repairs to the other guy's car so it makes sense to become a named driver on a car that you drive regularly. You'd just be extra careful if you were driving someone else's car in an "emergency"....
