Production Line

Very green of me but I assumed that D3's and RRS's would be built on seperate production lines. Pic from the gallery clearly shows a RRS in the foreground with a D3 at the top of the picture.......

To be honest I've never really thought about it. Embarassed

I don't know anything about the body shop or paint as I have never worked in those areas but it takes about 5 or 6 hours for a vehicle to travel down the main assembly lines. Then it has to go through all of the offline inspection processes before it is passed to sales, which takes another couple of hours.

So in theory, once your vehicle hits the main assembly line it could be into sales on the same day.

As a general rule of thumb, our target is to have no customer vehicles on site over one week old.

This is interesting. I expect I'd find out all about this if I was going on the factory tour!! Censored ! So what do you get at the end of the 5/6 hrs you refer to? An unpainted but assembled car body for a customer to spec via sales?

By the time the vehicle gets to the end of the main assembly line it is complete, ready for the customer. In theory you could collect your new vehicle and drive away from there.

All Land Rover vehicles are built to order, whether that be an individual customers requirement or a stock order from a dealership. Land Rover do not stockpile vehicles, it doesn't make economical sense.

Look what happened at Longbridge, the bailiffs are still trying to sell off all of surplus Rovers that were stored on an airfield somewhere.

All explained in the factory tour thread - but basically too many things conspiring against it that day... Banging Head I'd love to go though. I'll have to tag along on another trip if it ever gets arranged.

Wow - 6 hours to put an entire car together, ready to drive away? That's amazing, given the complexity of a modern car! I wonder how long it would take a bunch of humans to do the same thing?
