Nice enough city with the real outback just around the corner and housing is still affordable. Sydney and Melbourne are quite like Europe, you wont feel much of a difference. If you are really looking for a change, consider Perth.

As a younger man I was based in Jakarta for a couple of years and always flew out to Perth for weekend breaks. I really loved it there.
