RRS - relatively poor off road ?

Sad person that I am - I still read LRO each month. One sign of their anti - RRS stance (jealousy, ignorance and anti bling based stance) is their rating of the RRS' off road ability. In the buyer guides that appear each month at the back of LRO each Land Rover model is "star rated" for Everyday use, Off-road ability and Equipment & Accessory availability. You might be surprised to know that the relative ratings for LR products for off road ability are as follows:

Defender .... .... 5 stars
Freelander 2 .... .... 3 stars
Disco 3 .... .... 5 stars
RRS .... .... 3 stars........ Rolling Eyes
FFRR .... .... 5 stars
Disco 1 .... .... 4 stars
Disco 2 .... .... 4 stars
RR P38 .... .... 4 stars
RR classic .... .... 5 stars
Series 1 .... .... 5 stars
Series II & III .... .... 5 stars
Forward control .... .... 5 stars

Having driven all of the above off road I can confirm that the RRS is probably the best of all of them - so I think it should get 6 stars, not a humble 3 stars. RRS TDv8 HSE Rimini

I agree the ratring is a bit cock-eyed.

I put it down to a mis-print, 2 stars different to a Disco 3 and level par with a Freelander 2 Question

Mind you those series vechicles are pretty good going anywhere, with so little fuss, they just bounce out of the ruts and keep on going, so would agree 5 stars fully rated there

Considering the RRS & D3 have the same offroad tech I fail to see how they can give the D3 5 stars and the RRS 3 stars. The only obvious difference is a slightly better exit angle on the D3. 2005 Zambezi TDV6 - Gone but not forgotten
2009 Alaska TDV8 - Gone and much missed.

...and the fact it's more utilitarian than the RRS, which appeals to the people with beards from LRO.

For what its worth (and I know many will say "not much") my relative grading of the offroad ability of Land Rover products would be as follows. And this is based on similar tyres on a mix of mud, rut, rock, steep, deep and knarly ground - using unmodified vehicles (ie no optional or after market extras such as diff locks) - and ignoring the financial consequences of the odd dent, bump or scrape :

Defender .... .... 4 stars ................ lack of traction control or diff locks can severally limit in some situations

Freelander 2 .... .... 3 stars ............. good traction but relatively poor articulation and ground clearance

Disco 3 .... .... 4.8 stars .................. excellent all rounder (traction control / terrain response is a winner !) , but size (bulk) and weight can create limitations

RRS .... .... 4.9 stars........ .............. as for D3 but a bit more agile due to less bulk and TDv8 would pull trees out by their roots

FFRR .... .... 4 stars ........................there is less articulation and more flex than in the D3 / RRS platform (and only latest have terrain response)

Disco 1 .... .... 3.5 stars ...................lack of traction control or diff locks and bulk / overhangs can severally limit in some situations

Disco 2 .... .... 4 stars .....................good with traction control but still overhangs can limit

RR P38 .... .... 3 stars .................... a bit of a tank offroad without TC, but good articulation

RR classic .... .... 4.5 stars .............. my personal favourite in the non TC era - great articulation, pull on V8 auto and great soft springs

Series 1 .... .... 4 stars ...................light, agile and gutsy, but no TC, limited articulation on leaf springs and weak engines

Series II & III .... .... 3.5 stars .........heavier than Series 1 but same limitations

Forward control .... .... 3 stars ...........big and heavy, but can carry a lot

So on that basis the RRS is the winner Thumbs Up RRS TDv8 HSE Rimini
Disco 4 TDv6 HSE Ipanema
Defender 90, 200tdi CSW

Sorry, but how can a RRS score lower than D3? If they tested one with Dynamic Response it has better cross-axle articulation than anything (including 110 defender!)

Last time I was at a LR offroad meeting my RRS was going everywhere anything else was going... and in comfort too, the only thing that stopped me was the comp trial course where it was too tight for the bulk of the RRS. some of the climbs the series LRs were struggling at my RRS went up them as if they wern't there. A few of the sandy hills the stewards advised me not to do them as I wouldn't get over them, yeah right!
I got stuck once in the whole 3 day event and that was on my 4th run through the mud hole, got pulled out backwards and then ran through it once again Sons of dogs come hither and get flesh
