Helicopter ditches in sea

Just read that a helicopter has ditched in the ETAP field off Aberdeen,

Since I think 1 or 2 members are in the oil industry, I hope they are not involved or their family or friends and everyone comes home safe and sound Thumbs Up

The Super Puma was believed to have come down near a platform in the ETAP field 125 miles east of Aberdeen. The alarm was raised just before 1900 GMT.

If I remember right there is only one surface facility shared by BP and Shell in that area. I always hated going offshore way back when, chopper rides scared the crap out of me.... Rolling Eyes

Always paid to really pay attention to the offshore survival training we all had to do. Oil and Gas is always best done onshore preferably in the rockies or from my desk here in Houston. Brit across the Pond Wink

Wales 2006 Range Rover Sport 4.4 V8 HSE Java Black

Glad to hear they've all been rescued - hope that turns out to be the case.
I've been flying in helicopters to offshore installations for 30 years now - waaaaaaay too long and waaaaaay too many flights. I'm currently offshore Newfoundland, not too far from where the Titanic sunk and we have horrendous weather out here in the North Atlantic. Some say it's worse than the North Sea, but they're about even in my book. More fog out here, a little colder and we get icebergs quite regularly.
I've flown in Super Pumas (the type that went down offshore Aberdeen) for many years and they are good work horses. I now fly in new Sikorsky S92's which are a new generation and (hopefully) safer.
The safety training is really important as we are trained to get out of the chopper upside down, underwater. Hate to do it for real though. Shocked
Anyway, hope they're all ok. It always leaves a nasty feeling in the pit of my stomach when I hear about people hurt in the oil industry.

The aircraft was an EC225 (latest and newest version of the Super Puma)

Some context :-

3 hr survivability in heli passenger suit with thermal liner fitted and 2 layers of clothing, lifejacket with spray hood working OK, and uninjured.

Not good.

Also, probably the first S92 to crash. 2022 P440e AB
