My Virgin Off-Road Experience at LRE Half Day

On Saturday I did a Land Rover Experience half day at Skipton, North Yorkshire. This was free on VA’s advice in a post a while back.
The day was thoroughly enjoyable and I learnt what this car is really capable of! Amazing!
I feel ashamed I have never had mine really off-road……after that half day I am hooked and intrigued to see what else an RRS is capable of!

The other point that stuck out a mile was the knowledge of the instructor’s about the car compared to the sales guys……I don’t know about other LR garages but where I bought mine their knowledge was very poor compared to these guys!

I learnt so much I didn’t know, useful stuff as well, maybe you guys knew it anyway, and I’m sure you did. Some of the things really annoyed me because my dealer said it couldn’t be done! But what he meant was he didn’t know! I am talking here about the particular element of having the doors to automatically lock when you drive off (my girlfriend sees this as essential).

Other things learnt:

1. There is an off-road height higher than off-road mode (extended mode)
2. You can drive down steps!
3. The hill descent control is witchcraft!
4. The V8 is a worthwhile upgrade to say the least.
5. Pressing lock on the keyfob twice does not deadlock it, it actually turns off the internal alarm sensors, for your dog etc.

Truly an educational day and with a very knowledgable, friendly instructor, John.

Highly recommend to anyone.

I also got a couple of free LRE vehicle stickers, not really my thing so if anyone desperately wants one let me know.

The LR experience was my first taste of off-roading and I too was completely hooked by it. Glad you enjoyed your day. Thumbs Up 2005 Zambezi TDV6 - Gone but not forgotten

My next question is:

Are there any AT Tyres for 20"?

LRE's are always good days out, and as you have found out the guys running them know far more about the controls than many of the salesmen selling the cars. All dealers are supposed to have access to a small offroad area so they can show you all the controls - to the extent that the more recent "branded" dealerships have a mini track somewhere in the dealership plot.

Don't get too excited about taking your own one offroad though - remember if you bash yours it will cost you - bash an LRE car (unlikely, as they tailor the courses so as not to damage the cars!) and their insurance coughs up. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Yes but why not buy a cheaper set of 19's, get some MTR's put on them and swap over when you need to. 2005 Zambezi TDV6 - Gone but not forgotten

Buy a set of used 19" rims and you'll find there are plenty of 19" tyres to suit - 20" AT's are very thin on the ground................ rare as hens teeth and rocking horse sh Censoredt!

Sorry VA you answered sooner - JF, although MTR's are OK for snow use, if you go for 19's you will also find that there is a large selection of Winter tyres are available that will fit RRS too. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

I really don't want the hassle of swapping wheels, I just want the option of driving along a country road, and being able to dive off it.....hence I want to keep the 20s on but with more off roady tyres Thumbs Up

The problem with 20's is they are low profile so you risk damage to both the tyres and the rims, 19's have a higher profile and less likely to be damaged 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Low profile tyre are much more prone to punctures JF................................ that's what I was meaning - changing a tyre in the mud of a green lane isn't much fun especially with the dangerous jack LR supplies with the RRS 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

yea i love 5.... lock my sister in the car all the time at petrol stations. So she cant come in and buy half the sweets on display Mr. Green Whistle Whistle .

Also i agree with 3. First time i used it im sure i asked the instructor 3 times 'are you sure you want me to come off the accelerator AND the brake?!?!'.

Also there is a mode even higher than extended. If you hold the raise button when needed and already in extended it will go up a further 1.5inch iirc. WINNER - 2008 Best All New Photograph
