Battery Charging

Hi all,
First post from a new member, so apologies if this has been answered before and I haven't seen it. I've just acquired a 2007 Range Rover Sport TDV8 and want to charge battery as it's been idle for a while (before I got it). Can anyone tell me if it's ok to use a CTEK XS3600 charger with it's cigarette lighter socket adapter connected into the 12v socket in the boot? I've used this on my previous car with no problem, but nobody at the land rover dealer seems to know. They also said something about a calcium battery being in it and didn't know whether my charger would work at all?

All info/experiences greatly appreciated.

I wouldn't do that. There's too much electronics involved.

Its recommended to always use an approved constant current charger, designed for lead-calcium batteries. DO NOT use a fast charger, as permanent damage to the battery may occur.

On the other hand, since you've just acquired it, why not just take the vehicle for spin around the village? You'll enjoy the drive and also allow the battery to be charged! Wink Malaysia Boleh!

The Ctek is fine for lead calcium batteries, but I don't think you can charge through the power outlet. Porsche Cayenne S Diesel 66 Plate

Thanks for the quick replies - car is now connected and charging with the clip-on cables on the battery and seems to be doing it's thing ok.
Regarding the 12v connector, most people were a bit nervous about using the cigarette socket on my other car too (boxster) but after asking around a bit i found out that porsche did exactly this themselves with the same type of charger - and it worked fine. So nervousness aside, I wonder if any of the Land Rover engineers/tech people know definitively if this is ok on an RRsport also or not?

Playing it safe for now and directly connecting to battery which works ok, so now just curious about the answer rather than desperate!

The aux sockets are switched off without key.

You have to connect the charger directly to the battery. '08 RRS TDV8
I converted my diesel RRS to run on an environmentally friendly mixture of caribou fat and baby seals oil

battery charged ok

Hi all,

thanks for the advice, and thought I'd leave an update in case anyone else asks in future. Battery charged just fine with clip-on leads. CTEK-XS3600 works fine with RRS lead calcium battery. Also charged ok in very cold weather (-5) with no problem. Range Rover Sport TDV8 HSE, Buckingham Blue with Ebony Black

Update below for anyone interested. Have now had my CTEK charger connected to my RRS by local LR dealer so it's probably the most sensible way of doing it. CTEK charges with clip-on leads, or more sensibly with a pigtail lead that you screw onto the battery terminals and leave there to connect onto - this has no spark risk and is tidier, and what I normally use on other cars. Pic below shows RRS battery box (under plastic cover under bonnet) - green arrows show location of positive and negative terminal attachment points for pigtail, and blue arrow shows other end of pigtail where charger attaches. Whole thing sits nicely under battery box lid and makes attach/detach of charger safe and simple.

Could someone post a photo of theirs (off the car) and maybe post the LR part number from it so I can find one online.

Think it's probably a good idea to keep this clean and dry Thumbs Up

Frozen I don't have a battery there Shocked mine is on the other side of the car.
Seemingly there is a 12V live connection on the 13 pin trailer socket and I was going to use that to keep my battery charged through the winter, I have an OptimateII that I got for the bike but never used as I am able to keep it charged with a solar panel. The solar panel can't keep up with the battery drain in the RRS if it is anything less than fully charged. Next time I'm in Hasselt I'm going to ask about the battery drain while the car is switched off. Sons of dogs come hither and get flesh

T34 - Description is "Lid - Battery Box, Battery, Cover LHD - part no. DWN500022.

It's a mirror image of the one over the brake master cylinder on the other side of the engine bay - or is that missing too?

If that's missing you have real problems as you have nowhere to keep your cod & chips warm on the way home from the chip shop.
