Jaguar's V8 Diesel

The new generation diesel technology which delivered the efficient 2.7-litre V6 twin turbo in Jaguar's born-again S-Type in 2004 is about to create a big brother.

Jaguar engineers are believed to be close to unveiling a "V6+2" version on the superb new TD - a V8 based on the same compact V6 block design which will give bigger models in the range the kind of hitting power of Audi's V8 TDI.

This autumn, the current XJ flagship gains the 2.7-litre V6TD engine already used in the latest S-Type and Land Rover's new Discovery and Range Rover Sport. But there are strong indications that this is just the first taste of diesel power for the alloy-bodied XJ.

The promise of a new Ford-funded V8 turbodiesel for the XJ saloon and certain Land Rover products is all the more likely because Land Rover's current 174bhp six-cylinder TD6 is getting long in the tooth. By the end of 2006 it will be unable to achieve stringent new emission levels. That means the search is on for a new turbodiesel heart for the flagship Range Rover and its Sport running mate.

Although the twin-turbo 206bhp 2.7TD in the S-Type and the 193bhp single turbocharged 2.7TDV6 in Discovery are well-suited to their tasks, there's no denying the market needs a Jaguar/Land Rover TDV8 for prestige XJ models, Ranger Rover and the Sport.

On paper it looks as if it could be a compact, short-block eight-cylinder 3.6-litre unit with twin turbos and a power output in excess of 260bhp - light in weight, clean and delivering stunning torque with great economy.

Although neither Jaguar nor Land Rover are saying anything official about the existence of a V8TD, there's little doubt development work is well advanced and an Audi V8 TDI challenge is just around the corner from both premium British badges.

A Jaguar engineer at the S-Type launch in Monaco last April hinted at the feasibility of "tacking on" a pair of extra cylinders to the compact, stiff and lightweight TDV6.

"The block lends itself to expansion to V8 configuration," he told me. "We're very pleased with the V6TD, but there's more in that block and the technology advances we are making make it fairly obvious a V8 is the way to go."

More than a year on it looks as if Jaguar and Land Rover are almost there. The lightweight aluminium-bodied XJ saloon will no doubt perform well enough with the V6TD - but a V8TD will have more power, more torque and, more importantly, more charisma in a market where a V8 means a lot more than a V6.

The mighty Range Rover and Range Rover Sport aren’t being ignored either. Our spies spotted a development car powered by an all-new 3.6-litre V8 turbodiesel, to be built at Ford’s Dagenham plant. It’s thought that the engine will be good for around 250bhp and well over 400lb ft of torque.


Volume production should begin in November and around 35,000 engines should be made in a full year. It’s expected to be fitted to the Range Rover Sport later this year and the Range Rover in 2006. Ford is at the cutting edge of diesel engine design with this engine’s block, which is made from Compacted Graphite Iron (GGI). Industry experts say that as the massive fuel injection pressures found in modern diesel engines increase even further, CGI will also be used for cylinder heads instead of aluminium.


A Range Rover with hybrid power is also being planned to offset the criticisms of anti-4x4 campaigners, a top-level Land Rover source has revealed. The favoured option is a diesel/electric system, If it’s signed off soon the hybrid could be in the showrooms by 2009.

I wonder if LR will ever consider the V8 petrol that shuts down to a four cylinder when about town to save fuel as in the Cadillac range? L319 D4 HSE

News from the Dealer on the launch of the DV8

I have just spoken to my dealer about this.

It seems that the RR and RRS will be launched with the DV8 simultaneously.

The price point of the DV8 RRS is likely to be just under or about £50K

The projected mpg for this engine likely to be 18-20mpg.

Dealers should get the first cars by November 2006 for demo use

The TDV6 and DV8 will both be sold side by side, as the the TDV6 is likely to appeal to those who want more frugality.

Dealer asked me if I wanted to place a deposit of £1000 to put me top of the list and Customer Number 1.

RRUK,
The cylinder deactivation vehicles are far more likely to shut down cylinders when the car is under steady state driving on a highway, not around town.

2006 Range Rover Sport TDV6 SE Zermatt Silver

All this talk of a new diesel engine has got me thinking. Should I cancel the 2.7v6 SE due on saturday. Put and order in for a DV8 and suffer for the next few months or take delivery now and suffer for the next 3 years wishing I had waited for the new DV8. Answers please .

Well, you'll waiting for at least 12 months for the DV8.

The TDV6 is always going to sell 2nd hand, so even if you trade it after a year you'll get rid of it easily. L319 D4 HSE

Me thinks is it worth chopping in the Supercharged for such small improvements in economy = NO

I would have liked the V8, but having now been for a drive in a Superchip conversion I can't see any benefits other than a bigger dent in my wallet. The V6's performance after tuning will be similar or even better and have better mpg.
I'll be happy with that Very Happy TDV6 - gone

Agree that if those figures turn out to be correct, it won't be such a danger to the SC model after all. And it still won't sound as nice, I bet Wink

You said at one point you were getting about 12mpg, so 18-20 would be much better though right?

Let's face it, you really have to crawl around to get 18mpg out of the SC. L319 D4 HSE
