Hmmm... a curious choice of engine to wear the Porsche badge.

Yep... and even if Porsche are being pushed into the diesel world due to legislation it still doesn't mean people are going to buy them and you'd think choosing that engine in the Cayenne would alienate any potential customer further. Strange, but I suppose they've done their homework.

Why don't all these car manufacturers offer a 1.1 engine with no emissions hardly, which will bring average emissions down. No one will buy them but they won't get caught by these fines? (I am assuming it is the average emissions across the range that is measured) Porsche Cayenne S Diesel 66 Plate

Pelyma, you're right it is based on average emmissions for fleet of cars manufactured.

Alot of manufacturers don't actually believe hybrid format such as Prius (Parallel hybrid) is the way forward as this is essentially a petrol car (Something like 85 - 90% of the time in real conditions) which is supplemented by electric power. Parallel hybrid means that BOTH power units can drive the wheels. The downside being that the petrol unit will always overcome the electric unit in most driving conditions ecept maybe low speed urban driving.

It is believed that the GM E-Flex is a more realistic future for hybrids. This is a plug in series hybrid which the electric and petrol motor perform two seperate jobs.

The wheels will only ever drive the wheels. The small, econmical petrol or diesel engine is there mearly as a 'generator' to power the batteries when they get low. This means that, in the case of the GM E-Flex it can be fitted with a small, clean and highly efficient petrol engine giving a claimed range of 40 miles electric only and 640 miles with intervention from petrol 'generator'.

The plug in bit means that when you get home, 3 hours on mains charge will fill the batteries back up to full charge.

Finally, the diesel plant may not be used after all as GM claim that so little fuel is used in day to day running that it increases the case for ethanol as fuel consumption CAN be minimal.

In theory, if you only ever drive a max of 35 - 40 miles per day it will cost you absolutely nothing in petrol/diesel/ethanol and only the cost to recharge at home.

Finally, before you all nod off.....

GM claim an average equivalent of 150mpg.

Wonder if it's because Cayenne's generally sell well but Q7's don't?

Are Q7s not selling? That probably explains why a neighbour has sold his Toureg and bought a new Q7. Must be mad, don't tell Kaine but the Toureg is much nicer looking.
