I'm getting a high frequency 'vibration' throught the steering (you can feel it through the wheel as opposed to hear it and its more like a 'whine' than a vibration reallly) in all gears at 1700-200rpm... any ideas and is this common?

Similar things have been reported... with various fixes. If you do a search on "vibration" you'll see plenty of results so get a cup of coffee and have a read  

Is it like a buzzing sensation through the steering wheel and a harshness noise in background - then when you release the throttle it goes on the overun - and breath back on the throttle to bring the revs back and it returns. If so its normally front diff. It transmitts through the steering because of where the steering rack is mounted. You don't stop playing because you get old, You get old because you stop playing.
