Smashed UP STI - Will Insurance pay out? HELP!

One of my lads at work went out and got a new shape (not new new) STI for about 8 grand. He knew it was Cat D. First day out he piles up the rear end of another car. Big 'David Bryant Claymore style' Towbar = Big damage to said scooby.

Now the garage say it may not be economical to repair. They also say that it was not repaired properly before and should not have been MOT'd cos the Engine floor pan (what!!!??????) is all bent up.

My lad is a virtual nervous wreck, and if it wasnt for the fact that he hasnt done any bloody work this week with phoning people round - I would feel quite sorry for him(!)

The last time I had a crash I front ended my Mcoupe. Got a nice new E class delivered on a low loader next day. Rallied the taters off it for two weeks. Got car fixed up. Happy days.

But I wondered if anyone knew what MIGHT happen for my man? What are his likely options? should he have told insurance about Cat D status etc etc... Any help please?

Excuse my ignorance but does Cat D mean it has already been written off and repaired, because if it does then the insurer should already have been aware of that from the Insurance Company database. However if he didn't tell them as well on the proposal then they don't like non-disclosures like that............................. and he has probably just waved goodbye to £8k and the cost of repairing the other party's car and may even find that he cannot get cover in the future........................ in the current financial climate insurers are looking for any excuse not to pay out or to take on a bad risk

Cat D means its already been written off and repaired. However, it is perfectly reasonable to do this and it is also conceivable that the current owner does not know of the cars history (unless he was the person who wrote it off in the first place). I would have said that the responsibility for that kind of information lay with the Insurance company, not the owner.
In applying for insurance recently I was not asked whether the vehicle had been previously written off. It only asked if the vehicle had been modified, which in the case of a Cat D repaired car could be no - its not been modified its been repaired. So it could be that he answered all the questions honestly.
