Not that I'm in anyway pro-speed camera (I think the government really needs to think hard about why they are there and how they actually improve matters) but the answer you'll always get is that the law operates 24hrs a day. At the end of the day, if you are travelling along a motorway at 80mph then you're above the legal limit for that road.... unfortunately, that's a difficult argument to win. Times like that you need really to be stopped by a traffic cop with a sympathetic ear - not be recorded in a computer system by a camera. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for travelling at at speeds suitable for the road conditions and you won't find me travelling below 70 on a motorway when I've got a clear road ahead, it's just very difficult to argue with the law. My 6 points tells me that!

What's difficult here is for the state to use things like time of day, amount of traffic, weather conditions, quality of road surface and apply all those factors when one of their cameras shows someone travelling past at an illegal speed. As much as I agree with what you're saying, VA, I don't think any govt or body of people given that sort of responsibility would find it feasible - where do you draw your lines?

Maybe we should all just go and live on the Isle of Man... no cameras there to worry us!

snmoogle - I take your points and I know that variable speed limits on all roads is impossible, but I think an increase in speed limits on motorways and major A roads should be considered. Remember the M25 has a variable speed limit and it's a system I applaud. I think my main problem is that there are too many speed cameras and not enough patrol cars - the number of bad drivers out there seems to be on the increase and unless the police stop them in person I don't think the situation will improve. In an ideal world I'd say do away with all speed limits, and simply use the offence of dangerous driving. After all couldn't driving at under the speed limit in inappropriate conditions be construed as dangerous driving Eg; 65mph in heavy fog on a motorway. Unfortunately there would always be the idiots out there that would abuse that & the government would never put enough traffic cops out there to police it.

However it will never happen We do need more traffic police with common sense than spped cameras. There are far too many variables that need to be applied. What is safe in the GT3 would be very dangerous in a RRS & vice versa. Motorway speeds should be far higher, most traffic seems to travel around 85 anyhow. HSE TD6 (Java Black/Ivory)

Agreed. One of my brothers is a traffic cop and this is his thought exactly. The number of actively policing traffic cops is much less now on the open road - they tend to have a different remit these days. Much less observation and direct enforcement, more involvement in chasing bank robbers in high speed pursuits through town centres. He says a lot of the drivers in his division are morally split between what they believe the traffic cop should be doing and what the chief constable says they will be doing. Unfortunately, policing seems to have become a very political process now.
