Hong Kong 2005 Range Rover Sport Supercharged Vesuvius Orange
Best Offroad/Highway wheel/tyre combo?

Hi there,

Taking delivery of my new RRS SC 1st Edition next week. I have already signed up for a 16 day drive from Hong Kong to Thailand next September. Had a question about wheel/tyre combo though. My car comes with Stormer wheels which are absolutely stunning BUT i'm sure not the best for the kind of 4000km drive I will be participating in next year.

So, what would be the best combo of wheel and tyre? I'm assuming lots of 70% tarmac, 25% dirt roads and 5% heavy offroading.

Thanks for the help.

If you can get them in Hong Kong then a set of Goodyear MTR should be pretty good for what you want although they are more offroad biased, they are the tyre fitted to the G4 Challenge RRS's and D3's. The problem with the D3, Sport and the Range Rover is that there are very few suitable All Terrain Tyres in big enough sizes and with a suitable speed rating! Also trying to get STEEL wheels in the same size is a problem. Most of the suitable larger tyres like BF Goodrich All Terrains rub the wheelarches of RR and RRS when full steering lock is applied. General Grabber AT2 has recently been launched here in the UK (www.generaltire.com) and that is made in suitable sizes for D3,Range Rovers and RRS.
In the UK Silverline 4X4 (www.silverline4x4.com) are doing a special deal on 4 off 19" Goodyear MTRs complete with alloy wheels for £1400, I would suggest that like me you would want 5 and they quoted me £1700 for a complete set including fitting, valves and transporting to Scotland.
MTR's will not be quiet runners on highway but will give you good grip off road, AT2s will be much quieter on the Highway, give you good milage(both fuel and wearwise) and good offroad performance. Pirelli also make an All Terrain - Scorpion AT - but I don't know if it is available in the right size.

You will also find more info over on Martin's other website http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/index.php?si...d3f1785474

I know that BN who posts both there and here has fitted MTR's to his D3 but am not sure what brand he used.
It might also be useful to ask some of our American friends who post here and on the RRS section of www.rangerovers.net/forum/ what they use as a few of them over there offroad their Range Rovers, D3's and Sports quite a lot. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it
2018 Melting Silver Mini Countryman PHEV - soon to be replaced
2015MY Corris Grey SDv6 HSE Dynamic, the best car I have ever owned, totally reliable only a cou0le of rattles in 3 years, now no longer in my care
Also in my garage is a 1996 TDi300 Defender 90 County HT made into a fake CSW
