Slight tapping from engine

Hi all,

New to RRS had mine nearly a year Sport SDV6 2011
Have noticed a very slight tapping from the engine
Checked the oil under and just wondered could this be the cause of it
And what oil should I be using. Please see the photo.
The orange triangle is my washer fluid low

Thank you

yeah. I think you should get some oil in there without delay.

I would have though it was 5W30 C3

You will need a c1 oil as below. Don't just put any oil in, incorrect oil can contribute to excess smoke.

Gone 4.2 supercharged RRS
Gone 90
Gone s2000

with the gauge showing minimum (I guess it doesn't show any lower than that)
and unknown when it was last checked,

I think any old oil would be a good idea!
Well anything containing C

I think you are lucky you still have an engine.

How long since you last checked it?
Have you got a Leak?
Is it burning the oil?

You MUST use a 5w 30 C1 fully synthetic , the Shell Helix AF-L mentioned above is easily available at Opie Oils a site sponser

You can use C2 or C3 for short term but I would do a full oil change with filter so you know exactly where you are.

DO NOT use “any old oil” or you will need a new engine.

Keep driving around waiting for oil to turn up in the post
And he may end up needing a new engine!

Opie do next day delivery. Get the bus or a taxi while waiting. No need to take the risk.

With the system telling you to add 1.5 litres you still have approx 4.4 litres in the engine,
5.9 litres is the total for the 3.0 SDV6..

Read your hand book, and if I was you I would get a full oil change done,
then you can ask what they use and get some to top it up with next time round..

Absolutely, the system only measures the top 1.5 litres so when it tells you to add that amount you may find it still tells you to add more. In fact you could be running almost dry and it would still tell you to add 1.5 litres.

In “Dip Stick” terms this could be equivalent to off the bottom of the stick.

There is no low oil level warning and the oil pressure warning light is just to tell you to fit a new engine.

Drain the oil, if there is any, to see where you were, then start with a fresh load of oil.

Hi all,

Thanks for all your replies.

Just to give you an update, I added approx 2.5 litres of oil C1 grade
and checked the level and is now 1 bar below the max, just a bit odd that
the list reading was below the minimum.....I will now book
in for a full oil change and will keep my eye on it.
The guys who done my gear box flush said was a slight
oul pump leak but not major.

So, as said you were “off the bottom of the dip-stick.”

Glad you sorted it but you need to understand how it happened or it will happen again.

Has the tapping stopped with the fill-up?

The tapping I think is still there but not sure if it's in my mind now.
The tapping doesn't get louder on acceleration so not quite sure.

Think I might get a second opinion
