EPB Brake Shoes

So whilst in the North of Scotland last week I developed a very very loud alternate squeal and grinding noise from the rear right brake. I knew they were getting close to being changed but not that close. Checking showed loads of meat on the pads so decided it wasn’t the pads so must be the shoes. When I got home I stripped it down to find no foreign objects in the drum but I did find a scored surface on the drum and a thick coating of rust/dust on the shoe with corresponding ridges to the scores in the drum.

Anyhow, new discs, new EBC red pads and new shoes fitted. Only issue is the Shoes came with a fitting kit with all springs and when I went to fit the short spring which fits between shield and secondary shoe, there was no hole. I checked Bodsys brake bible and he doesn’t show this spring either. What does it do, do I need it and should I strip down again to drill a hole and fit the spring? Thoughts or advice gladly accepted.

Have a couple of genuine L/R kits here and no spring like that is included in the kit, not sure whether that helps or not can't see it mentioned in w/manual either.

Cheers

Cheers guys, I’ll not worry about it then.

I wonder if these are the original shoes from the factory (they are genuine LR items) and that spring is used to hold the secondary shoe in place while something else is done.

On a side note, Bodsys Brake bible was spot on except for setting the EPB to service mode. I thought of trying the GAP IID tool but in the end I just did it without being in service. Appears to have worked ok. 2012 5.0 SC AB

The springs you mention are shoe balance springs and hold each shoe back from 'acting' at differing rates ( enening out the expansion if you like..). They can be Red and Green in colour, but have noticed that some fitting kits do not include them.
Mine were not in good order and it made me think that they would cause more harm if they broke and dropped into the drum. 2011 MY D4 HSE

Yes. Left mine out as they were looking rusted and thin with total lack of tension.
Far too risky in the drum. 2011 MY D4 HSE

Didn't realise you meant the small red & green one's, the one in the picture looks far bigger, the coloured one's are in the L/R kit but hardly look man enough to do any good, one off each colour in each kit.

Cheers

Certainly look small to do anything, and cn only think they're there to help keep the shoes on the adjuster. 2011 MY D4 HSE
