Hybrid and A/C Temporarily unavailable ? SDV6.

Hi Guys.

I had a fault about 1 month ago which came up on the TFT screen while running in full hybrid, Manual Mode with the EV button depressed. It was almost Empty of battery power then all of a sudden a big red triangle comes on the screen saying "Range Reduced " and then a minute or so after in a orange triangle saying "Hybrid System and A/C Temporarily unavailable"

When I spoke to my dealer they said see if it does it again then bring it in !
Well today it did it again with the same symptoms, once the battery was almost completely empty. I done about 6 mile from home this morning once it happened as you can see from the photos I done 18% engine off.

I think it is the secondary Auxiliary battery which is in the o/s rear boot panel which is being faulty causing the Auxiliary systems unable to run while in full Hybrid. Obviously not holding enough charge in it to run climate, A/C, radio etc !
Once the main SDV6 restarts it clears and until now a month later it hasn't came back on but it is starting to be more common now so going to get it into the dealers to diagnose.

I have attached some photos sorry for the bad shots it was sunny and was rushing to get ok photos incase the display cleared.

Just wondering if any other SDV6 Hybrid drivers have came across this ?

Any help would be appreciated Thumbs Up

Thanks.

Tom.

If you had the HV battery nearly discharged and also had the climate running and audio on then the ECU for the HEV will drop all the heavy consumers in use to have enough EV charge before switching you back to diesel power. I had a similar thing happen in my Countryman PHEV yesterday and on investigation I had almost run the HV battery to 1 mile range but was also running the climate control and the audio system (I have the top model Harmon Kardon Logic 7 sound system in the Mini and the amps are big power consumers).

Does your car still have the auto stop/start system when running in diesel only mode? Forced running in diesel with stop/start enabled would soon let you know if the auxiliary battery wasn’t fully charged as the system won’t work if the battery in the boot isn’t charging, the load is too high or the outside temperature is below 5c.

In my car I only needed to plug into a public charger or switch to petrol only/Save mode to get the battery charge back enough to clear the warning and for the ECU to let me even select pure or part electric driving (I can have 100% electric drive or run using both the engines together for Better acceleration). Initially I thought that the car wash I had just pulled out of had drowned something vital in the HV system! 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Hi Tim.

Sorry for my slow reply had a busy day today at work !

I know what you mean about running the Hybrid battery system down but it's never done this before well only two times ! Yes I have the high audio system too the Meridian Signature Reference sound system 1700watts so I guess this draws some power too, not that I really have it loud as it is just mind blowing too loud Shocked

With the SDV6 Hybrid you can switch the auto stop start off so the Hybrid system is off and the engine is running continuously this will hold the charge in the hybrid but you cant do stop start with just the engine alone. Otherwise this would of been a good test Tim Thumbs Up

You have 5 modes :

Auto Hybrid, it picks the best engine and hybrid combination its self so you dont have to worry about anything.

Auto stop / start off, this switches off hybrid and runs the SDV6 continuously keeping your hybrid charge.

EV on this is when you force hybrid on with the button this will give you the most EV Hybrid running.

Sport mode gives you the power of the SDV6 and electric motor to it's full potential, 354 Mr. Green

EV Boost charge, while traveling at higher speeds above 50mph with the SDV6 push the EV button in and this will boost the charging in the battery very quickly, even more under acceleration too.

So these are the modes Tim Thumbs Up

Oh dont we love Hybrids Mr. Green

I Still use my Discovery 2 Td5 Es Premium, old faithfull Thumbs Up

Will keep you posted how I get on at the dealer.

Thanks.

Hi Guys.

We'll have a update on this little issue. As I said I took my Hybrid to my dealer yesterday and they done their magic stuff, plugging in etc Rolling Eyes

As I suspected the auxiliary battery was discharged slightly ! We'll it wasn't flat but not 100% healthy. They keep these in stock so they fitted it in and within a couple of hours I was sorted and on my way home again, well after the test drive.

Once the job was complete the Hybrid technician who done the job said could we go for a test drive with me driving it and himeself having it plugged into his tablet so we could get some live data results when in full Hybrid, when in Diesel and also in both diesel and hybrid (sport mode).

The data they can see is amazing I must say I was really impressed, shame we couldn't get this data on the TFT screen as it gives you so much information about the Hybrid system, volts, %, power, Kilowatts, loads of digital gauges, and analogue digital gauges etc Rolling Eyes
I guess all this information for some people would be too much but for me I would love it with my OCD Mr. Green

We'll least now I have all new batteries so I'm well chuffed, I had my main battery changed under warranty last August Thumbs Up

Hopefully this helps anybody else who gets this issue with their SDV6 Hybrid.

Thanks.

Glad it was all solved quickly and easily. Now that JLR is concentrating more and more on light hybrid systems and PHEVs hopefully they will also properly train more technicians to deal with the special issues these motive systems can have. The dealership I bought the Countryman from has one specialist salesman but NO specially trained techs and they sell BMW electric vehicles as well as Mini PHEV and they will also be dealing in the forthcoming Mini BEV, they have ONE specialist technician shared between 4 servicing centres............. now it isn’t waiting for a courtesy car to become available, it’s waiting for the availability of the electrified vehicle specialist to be available!
When you say that the main battery was replaced was that the HV storage battery or the Diesel engine 12v battery? 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Hi Tim.

Yea it was resolved quickly, Marshall Halsworth now have 2 fully trained top technicians that are Hybrid trained as apparently there are some jobs on these vehicles which require 2 people working together on the HV equipment batteries etc.

It does seem that JLR are getting their guys trained up for Hybrid / Phev vehicles but they could have started a quite a few years ago but suppose they are catching up now.

That seems a bit daft with mini only having one technician between 4 dealers !! Suppose if you are the technician your not short of work and hopefully would be payed pretty well Rolling Eyes Doubt that last bit !
Well they better get training people quick as Hybrids are becoming more popular.

Sorry I didn't make myself clear it was just the main 12volt battery which was replaced by warranty. The main HV battery is still the original. I can still do 1.3 mile on full EV if I take it easy on flat ground using around 20% -30% power so the main HV battery is still very healthy. I used to get about 1mile to 1.1 mile before my hybrid had its updates by the Gaydon landrover technicians so now as I said I get around 1.3 miles max EV. I know it doesn't sound alot but my average % of engine off per trip is around 40% and I'm well into 50mpg on a 20mile trip of a and b road driving. Mr. Green

Landrover gives a 5 year warranty on all the Hybrid EV/HV equipment so I still have 2 years remaining if i have any issues Thumbs Up

I'm well impressed with my Hybrid I must say.

Thanks.

It’s only the group that the local BMW/Mini dealer is part of rather than BMW policy as far as I know. The dealers I use have only ever had a few BMW 13’s i’8 and 4 Mini PHEVs (the mini PHEV is an i8 in reverse - the petrol engine in the Countryman drives the front wheels whereas the same power plant drives the rears in the i8! And the 2 series PHEV runs the same layout as Mini but with less power in the petrol engine).
I too have been impressed with mine, despite what was reported in the motoring press it has quite sufficient power,is very very quiet in petrol mode unless you floor it then I get a nice throaty exhaust note from the little 1.5 three cylinder turbo. Petrol economy is fantastic at 35mpg but as i’m Now getting near to 80mpg doing >80% in pure electric mode and now the temperatures are warming up the electric range has gone from frosty morning 14 miles to 24 miles which isn’t far off the the claimed 26miles Mini says it should do. It is so good that i’m Sold on electric motoring! 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Hi Tim.

Yea i suppose your local dealer will get the shortage of hybrid technicians sorted in the future.
But hopefully you will not have to go into the dealer for too many if any issues !

Never knew your mini was similar to a I8 there good little cars too. Must admit I have seen a few of your Mini clubman Phevs on the road and they look really smart.
Your 80mpg is really good makes my 50-55mpg sound not so good Rolling Eyes But the sport is a pretty heavy beast so it's still not bad, my Hybrid is still lighter then a SDV8 though.

Yes I certainly notice you get more electric range when it is warmer and alot more % of engine off too.

Must admit I'm liking the Hybrid very much it certainly is the way to go.

It's such a shame landrover doesn't now make a phev SDV6 as I'm sure it would attract alot of customers as I think the little 4 cylinder petrol is just too revvy for a range rover? That's just my opinion.

I have test driven one not a sport only a full fat Phev and find it's ok when normal driving but when you boot it, it seems to sound as you are thrashing it as it revs so much Shocked It goes well but it's just that little engine not quite right for a sport or full fat range rover.

Still for a city range rover they are good I suppose, doubt it no good for long hauls, as I wouldn't want to run that petrol engine alone as I would hate to think what the mpg from that petrol engine would be 20-25mpg ?

Who knows they might even bring out a hybrid defender in the future? Rolling Eyes

Thanks.

I’m banking on there being a PHEV or BEV Defender in 2020, but I doubt it will come at launch which will be a pity. As the next Def looks like it might be a Disco4 for the 2020’s it should have the ability to carry the additional 150-200kgs of batteries but the 2.0ltr petrol will be too small and insufficient torque for off-road use that a Defender will be expected to be capable of. I’m banking on it being good enough to replace both my Def90 TDi 300 and my Countryman so I can reduce to a single vehicle that can cover all bases......... 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Yea I would love to see a defender hybrid / Phev or even as you say Bev. But like the new Evoque it hasn't been released with any Phev or Bev just a mild hybrid system 48v.

So we might see a hybrid defender in maybe 2021 ? I'm just looking forward to seeing it.
Yea the 2.0 petrol engine doesn't have the torque for offroad use or towing. I must admit defenders with the 200tdi and 300tdi are bullet proof if looked after.
Dont sell your 300tdi it's a old faithful just like my 2 disco's a 04 TD5 and my old classic 3 door g reg 200tdi disco Thumbs Up

I might try a test drive in a mini like yours, my Mrs loves them. It would be for her as it would suit her, second hand though.
She struggles driving my sport as it's big, plus I dont want her scuffing my 22's ! Rolling Eyes

What are the models and specs on these ? What's best etc.

Thanks.
