I was wondering how many people have turned off their keyless entry for security reasons? I was thinking of doing this myself although my keys are kept in a locked metal security box whenever I'm home day and night. Is switching keyless off a worthwhile inconvenience do you think? Cheers Laurence.

I disabled the keyless entry using the method outlined on YouTube but re-enabled it after a day as I liked the convenience. As for locking keys in a metal box, just make sure it actually works. I bought a metal key safe which surprisingly didn’t - it turned out the tiny gaps at the hinges were enough for for the radio signals to get out. I now use an old metal sweetie tin with a hinged lid which I’ve tested by putting both keys in it and standing next to the car. Nothing happens. But if I open the lid just a fraction the car unlocks, so make sure you test your metal container!!

Btw, I’ve also got an enquiry in with JLR about whether the RRS (MY19) uses the same UWB technology that Which? recently reported was on the MY18 FFRRs and Discos and which defeated the relay theft method. I’ve yet to get a response but will update here when I do.

Isn’t there some pouch you can buy to put your keys in? I also heard putting them in the microwave works?? Cheers Laurence.

There is a pouch but I don’t have one yet as I tend to be further away from the car when I park it away from the house - not a perfect strategy but a risk-based one. I’ve heard a microwave works too, but there’s too great a chance one of the kids will cook them if I left them in there!!
The metal key safe failure was a real surprise but actually makes sense when you think about it. Basically ANY gaps in the metal box will completely undermine the protection it otherwise offers so definitely worth checking. I’m hoping the UWB technology will come to the rescue as it’s hard to see why the FFRR and Disco would have it but not the RRS, but who knows.

I’ve just had an email from Land Rover customer service who have confirmed that “the Range Rover Sport is fitted with UWB technology for 2018 model year vehicles and any vehicles manufacturered after.”

So hopefully relay theft shouldn’t be too much of a concern for owners of fairly recent cars - at least until the criminals work out how to overcome UWB technology!!
