Is JLR telling the truth over last ¼ losses?

Just announced on the noon news is that JLR made a £90million loss last quarter - but is it a loss or just that profits didn’t meet expectations........... in the last quarter UK sales were tiny due to the new emissions rules not being set in time so no new cars could be delivered, the Solihull factory is currently closed on holiday....... because of a drop in sales and the bottom has fallen out of JLR’s Chinese market. Maybe it’s more of a problem that they are frightening off customers with their lack of interest in dealing with technical issues, the ludicrous prices now being charged for the products that have to be returned time and again for quality control issues and they really need to back up their dealers and not hide behind “ you have to deal with the dealership not with us” attitude when things go badly wrong. Wake up and smell the coffee JLR, you are haemoraging loyal customers who have returned to the brands time and time again but now are going elsewhere because of your senior management’s disgraceful attitude to customers and you are building cars that people don’t want to buy - Disco 5’s and Velars mostly - you need to have some serious re-thinking about the way your range’s designs is going and return to designing cars like the RRS L494 and FFRR L405, the last Defender and previous Discovery design that people really want to buy. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it
2018 Melting Silver Mini Countryman PHEV - soon to be replaced
2015MY Corris Grey SDv6 HSE Dynamic, the best car I have ever owned, totally reliable only a cou0le of rattles in 3 years, now no longer in my care
Also in my garage is a 1996 TDi300 Defender 90 County HT made into a fake CSW

They may call it a loss, but in reality it is not. If a company made 100 million profit last year, but this year makes 90 million profit, they term it as a 10 million loss. Big Cry

Tim in Scotland, I couldn't agree more. Although thankfully I haven't had a major run in with JLR, their vehicles leave a lot to be desired compared to say 2010. The Disco 5 was everything we wanted in a utilitarian family vehicle and personal taste I know, but I haven't met anyone who thinks the new Disco is a success to look at. Why do JLR make every successive vehicle larger & larger? May not be JLR alone I suppose.... I haven't looked at a Velar close up but I'm not a lover of it on the road. The Evoque has its followers but I reckon the Discovery Sport must be a better & more usable all round vehicle especially in Dynamic form so why make both when they are so similar in size? My brother has had both & favours the latter hands down. Lastly, the lack of a farmer/utility company vehicle is a travesty. This is where they made their name but I guess 70 years is a long time ago to present management. By by the time they get the new Defender out they will have lost ground...and I'm guessing it will look like some sort of chavs Tonka toy when it arrives.
Enough ranting... Rolling Eyes

All very disappointing from JLR but perhaps no surprise to those of us who follow the forum. I thought a telling remark made during the news piece (after having mentioned various possible reasons for falling sales in China - including extra local taxes) was that 'the other major European manufacturers don't seem to be similarly affected'.

In the last few months I've had two friends who confess to not knowing much about cars ask my opinion about buying a new Range Rover Sport and told them both to think very carefully and mentioned the engine failures, poor quality control, dreadful dealership behaviour and exorbitant prices. Both bought Volvo. So that's two lost sales for JLR. 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

You have hit the nail right on the head there Tim.
Send your post in an email to the top man at JLR and tell him a few home truths the real reasons why they are not selling as many vehicles as predicted.
Many of us said on here that they would get their comeuppance if they didn't change their attitude towards its customers.
I have zero sympathy for the company, but feel sorry for its workers with the threat of losing their jobs because of blatant ignorance by its management.

JLR's revenues were £5.6bn on sales of 129,887 vehicles in the three months to October.
£5.6bn in three months. That's £43,114 per vehicle. Did it really cost that much, on average, to build each vehilce? And they made a loss? No way.

Looks like they are lining up some plan that involves reducing staff costs i.e. moving production out of the UK. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

To be honest its not just JLR having problems with cars,,Vehicles now have too many electrics so your going to have problems, remember the good old days when we were running around in mk1 & mk2 escorts ect,you could change a engine in a couple of hours, now it takes a day or so to move all electrics, plastic covers ect before you can even get near the engine. As for the dpf & emission problems,Well what can I say, your adding things to the exhaust which reduces flow of gasses which then creates more problems.Yuo see old RS2000 escorts now doing between 20-30k some 40 years on,,these LR products probably wont make 20 years before they are all scrapped,No one will be able to afford the repair bills when they go wrong, imagine buyin a second hand sport in 20 years time for a couple of 000 & then getting a bill for 10k when it goes wrong.

I think its sheer greed and incompetency, though they would not be the only car manufacturer to cite Brexit as a concern.

JLR have been building a mega factory in Hungary for the last 4 years - allegedly to produce Disco5 and Disco Sport but according to the press the capacity is way more than current production volumes of both vehicles together. I-Pace is already built only in Austria and that can be transferred to Hungary easily too. And they have their factory in China that is now under producing.........
Of course there is one very easy way to stimulate sales............ but existing owners wouldn’t like to see their cars residuals drop hugely in value come part ex time neither would the Banks providing PCP’s and Leasing arrangements if suddenly the prices of new cars dropped by the amounts needed to make JLR competitive again and to reflect the poor QC and customer back up.......... 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Even the governments own National Audit Officr thinks it could be a big problem and the Chancellor is saying a no deal Brexit will require a substantial change to budgets. The CBI and a lot of businesses have genuine concerns. Some may chance their arm and use it as an excuse to move but there are many, many others including massive businesses saying they will have to seriously consider it or will be going.

Even govt is planning on stockpiling food and medicine.

Clearly Brexit at any cost and/or no deal is a massive risk and in my personal view unacceptably so though I accept others will disagree.
