Oil Leak noticed - any help appreciated

Hi all

Noticed a small oil leak under my 2014 RRS this morning.
Seems to be coming from between the rear wheels.
Took a peek and it looks to me like there's a nut missing ?

Any help on identification / fixes much appreciated.

cheers

photo of leak source attached for reference..

looks like diff drain plug,

Try tightening it up if you have the correct tools.

Hi

Thanks for the reply.
I'm guessing that there should be a nut that could be tightened, but all I can see is a thread.

Guess the nut has fallen off somewhere...

Hi,

There is no nut.

You can see the externally threaded drain plug. A 1/2” ratchet usually fits in the square recess to allow you to tighten it slightly. It’s a tapered thread so it seals more as it’s screwed in.

Don't go overboard tightening it. If you're competent then you'll know how easily the steel thread will strip it's surroundings in that housing.

The plug has lock tight on it when you buy it, you can see a trace of white on the thread in the picture. The torque setting is 28nm so if you have a low range torque wrench you could see if it’s tight enough. It doesn’t go all the way in some thread will still show when tight.

My preferred action would be to remove the fill plug, then remove the drain plug, refit a new drain plug and refill with oil (1.1ltr).
Torque for fill plug is 34nm.

Hope this helps, I’ve just done all my diffs and transfer box and its straight forward.

Phil

I don't know if it's just the angle of the photo, but it doesn't look square to the thread, almost as if it was cross-threaded. This could explain why it's tight but still leaking. Did you have the diff oil changed?

Update:

Well just had it up on a ramp of a local mechanic I know so I could take a look. Leak starts higher up and just manifests on the drain plug.

Looks like it might be some seals gone in the diff, so will need to take it to a specialist.

Anybody know if its a pricey job ?

Rolling Eyes

waiting for dealer call back ...
tried an independent LR specialist who said he wouldn't do it.... so I guess I'm going to need a new mortgage...
