Low miles - Petrol only or is diesel an option on older car?

Hi,

Looking to buy a RRS (or maybe FFRR) and it will mostly cover 2miles each way to station and approx 10-20miles at weekend with the odd 200 mile thrown in...

Thinking about a 3.0 (2009/2010) diesel but would I have DPF issues? I assume so... And also the 3.6 (2008)? For this type of low mileage should I forget the diesels and just get a SC (although a 5.0 would prob blow my budget).

Anyone run a diesel with low milage? All advice appreciated.

Definitely petrol,now I’ve got rid of my pickup I’m using my14 SC to commute to work & back 6 miles a day in the week & a run out with the wife on a Sunday to give it a good blast & waste about £50-£60 in fuel but it worth it as it puts a smile on my face.

If you can find a very early Facelift 2010MY 3.0SDv6 then they didn’t have DPF’s - they also had straight out exhausts instead of the downward pointing tips of the DPF cars that came in 2011MY.
For such short journies an electric bike or a PHEV would be a better option than a diesel as Diesel engines operate best once fully warmed up and at steady RPM, even a petrol engined car would not get to best efficiency over a two mile drive. Apart from DPF issues you would also suffer battery issues in both petrol and Diesel engined RRS or FFRR (and most other makes) as you would never drive enough miles to put any charge back into it and in winter you also load it up with lights, heater, heated seats, heated front and rear screens and a heated steering wheel, even maybe a park heat device......... you sound like the ideal candidate for an EV! 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Petrol is likely to be a better bet, depending on the time of mileage you are doing and the depth of your pockets.

House location and work circumstances changed for us and we can use one car between us to run to and fro work most days. About 8 miles each way with a short motorway section. We've run two 2010/11 diesel SUVs (not LR ones) with DPFs as a daily runners and had no problems with the odd longer run as an extra if we haven't done one in a while.

I have a 2011MY TDV6 and it has both DPF and straight-style exhausts.

I don't know if you would have DPF issues with that low mileage daily, but I bet you would get some issues... turbo actuator, perhaps, or something else. I agree a petrol would make a heap more sense. What you'll pay in fuel costs will be saved in repair bills, I expect, but without the hassle. AFAIK, the non-DPF had the down turned exhaust pipes and the DPF equipped ones were straight (mine is non-DPF and down turned). The definitive indication is that there is a letter in the VIN number which indicates if it is equipped with one or not. I did have that on my check list when looking for mine, but can't find it now, obviously Embarassed

Edit; Found it after a bit of Google-Fu. The eighth digit will be "F" without a DPF, and "G" with a DPF (mines F)

I may sell my 2006, 4.2 supercharged HST, black, ivory leather, sunroof, TV screens in rear, new lather steering wheel, unmarked 20 inch black alloys, new black side steps, 92k, FSH - just had B service, just had a stage 2 machine polish. 2006 RRS Supercharged 4.2 HST muthuaflecka!

Thanks guys. I prefer the interior of the facelifts and was only considering diesels as there are more of them out there and the post 2010 petrols (5.0) are steep in price.. Not worried about petrol/day to day running costs as wont do the milage to worry.

Cymruambyth, I see your RRS and looks lovely and probably the type I would go for if I go pre-2010, but I also need to shift a 2010 Audi TTS first.
